¶ … bullying in their lives. It can lead to instances of suicide or just a difficult time all around. Bullying can be complex topic to understand because people who bully are often bullied themselves or get abused and mistreated at home. Bullying is not just as simple as some kid picking on another kid. In fact bullying can occur at work, at home, and even in the street. It's not just a school only occurrence.
Bullying maybe difficult to understand because of the nature of human emotion (Rosenthal 11). Bullying after all is perceived as a reaction to something. What that something is, is unique for every, single person. Some bullies have confessed they bully to gain power and respect from their peers. They see weaker people and by picking on them, they gain the respect and attention from people they want as allies.
Others bully because they want power. They feel powerless in their own personal lives so they want to take back some of that power they lost by belittling and picking on someone else. Many cases of school bullies show that they come from broken homes. The kids are often neglected and abused by their parents, leaving them empty and searching for release.
Another cause of bullying could simply be because it's allowed. Although some schools have cracked down on bullying, it's still not seen as a big enough problem to stop or in the very least monitor student or even employee social interactions. If kids, adults see that their actions bare no ill consequences they will continue to do what they feel like. Bosses for instance, at times bully their employees because they feel their employees or their subordinates will not do anything about it (Einarsen 23). Although the bullying may appear to be just verbal bashing or constant put downs, it still makes the person receiving it feel bad, defenseless, powerless, and often depressed.
Bullying is and always will be a horrible example of poor human behavior. It creates ill will within a group and prompts others to follow suit in the ill-conceived behavior. It is not only an unfair way to act, but it can also be cyclical causing the bullied to become the bully. Bullying has become a hot topic in the last two decades and this is mainly due in part to the people who have had enough of being bullied. The Columbine shooting was just the first of a series of shooting that point a light to the tolerance of people and bullying (Cullen 40).
People cannot take bullying, especially in the long-term. As it has been shown, people who endure long-term bullying often become broken, fragmented, and even insane. They may lose touch with reality and seek only death as an escape from their tormented existence. Many teens and adults have committed suicide as a result of bullying. Many have committed heinous murders as a result of bullying. But there is a solution.
Although bullying will never truly get resolved, it can be lessened. People must teach each other to speak up when they're being bullied and staff of institutions and even companies must learn to become not only receptive to the complaints of the bullied but also proactive. As previously mentioned, bullies will keep bullying if they know they can get away with it. If they face monetary consequences such as fines and have the public become aware of their actions, they will less likely continue to bully.
