Re: Smoking in the workplace
From October 1st-January 1st a smoking cessation clinic will be offered to all employees, free of charge. The clinic will be held from 2pm-4pm in the conference hall. All employees are encouraged to attend who could benefit. The clinic will cover cognitive behavioral strategies to help quit smoking and offer a supportive network for people struggling with this addiction.
The clinic is being offered in light of new state laws which have outlawed smoking in all workplaces. Smokers are required to stand at least twenty feet from the doorway of any business area.
We are aware of the inconvenience many smokers feel regarding the passage of this new law. However, legally we are required to comply with it. We are also aware of the complaints that non-smokers have made regarding the frequent breaks smokers take during the day, which can result in delays and lost productivity. Additionally, we have received complaints from an EPA inspector of evidence of smoking found in the second floor women's room.
All of these multiple grievances underline the degree to which smoking is an ingrained and difficult habit to break. With sensitivity to these divergent concerns, the company has chosen to offer the smoking cessation clinic. The clinic will be part of the normal workday of all employees. Not only is it free of charge, but employees will not have to make up for the lost hours they must spend at the clinic.
