Mental Health Professionals, Understanding What Is Impacting

¶ … mental health professionals, understanding what is impacting patients and their employees requires careful observation. This occurs through seeing if there is anything that is out of the ordinary. The situation with Eileen; is classic example of using these tools to realize when something more severe is happening. (Palmo, 2006)

In this particular case, Eileen is known as someone who is stable and reliable in organizing / managing the office. However, once she starts crying, is when she is dealing with more unusual challenges. Mental health professionals have a duty to identify the root causes of these problems and helping her to address them. (Palmo, 2006)

For Cora, she has unique responsibilities as a counselor and her employer. This is because she has to make certain that Eileen is able to work through these problems in order to perform her job efficiently. At the same time, she has an obligation to ensure that any kind of issues impacting Eileen are brought to the forefront. (Palmo, 2006)

The moment she realizes that Eileen is in a different mental state, is the point she begins to discuss what is happening. This is when Eileen discloses to Cora her problems and what is causing them. After speaking with her in private for an hour, Cora recommends that she seeks out professional therapy. This changes her mental state and she begins performing her normal activities effectively. (Palmo, 2006)

What was discovered, during this brief conversation, is that Eileen could be suffering from a number of issues. The most notable include: she is afflicted by some type of mental disorder or there are specific challenges at home which require further assistance. As far as suffering from a mental disorder, it is clear that she may have a form of depression. This occurs in people who are living what appear to be normal lives. Yet, underneath the surface, they feel overwhelmed and do not believe their problems can be solved. This could explain Eileen's unusual behavior. (Palmo, 2006)

Moreover, there is also the possibility that Eileen could be suffering from a form of bi polar disorder. Under this diagnosis, a person can appear to be normal and will have sudden bouts of depression for no reason. Later on, she can feel positive and excited about events in her life. The challenge for them; is maintaining a level set of emotions, attitudes and beliefs. (Palmo, 2006)

In the case of specific challenges at home, Eileen could have a family problem that is impacting her emotional state. This can cause her to feel overwhelmed and lead to symptoms such as crying. Furthermore, there is the probability of her becoming withdrawn and not wanting to bother others with her troubles. In this case, Cora has a responsibility to understand what is happening and work with Eileen to identify long-term solutions. (Palmo, 2006)
