While children generally have a tendency to express little to no enthusiasm with regard to experiencing a full-time school day, particular individuals such as Stephen Trachtenberg believe that society needs to gain a more complex understanding of the idea of school in order for people to be able to acknowledge that it is their best interest to support a school day lasting for eight hours. Trachtenberg's theory regarding how it would be good for society to accept the extension of school hours is flawed when considering things from a series of perspectives.
Families play an essential role in a young individual's upbringing and it would be wrong for schools to "take on some of the instruction traditionally associated with families" (Trachtenberg 213). Doing so would practically make it difficult for children to understand why it is important for them to stay close to their families and why family matters in the first place. Children who would spend most of their time at school would practically get the feeling that they should primarily focus on learning information from teachers rather from learning from their parents.
Teachers would have difficulty providing each student with equal attention if they were to spend eight hours of their time teaching. This would mean that some children would be unlikely to be provided with the attention that they receive at home. Life is not all about learning information mechanically, as children need to have role models and need to be provided with the caring that only a parent can provide.
It is not necessarily that children need to focus on respecting the agrarian calendar. It is actually that this calendar is, to a certain degree, important for them because it teaches them information that they would be unable to learn while in school. It would be absurd for someone to try to compare a teacher with a parent, regardless of the respective teacher's devotement to performing his or her work. Surely, this is only applicable when considering normal families where parents do not abuse their children and play an active part in assisting their children develop healthily.
Education should not be considered a luxury and everyone should have access to it regardless of people's condition. However, by turning education into a full-time activity quality family time might actually become a luxury. This is why it is important for the educational system to acknowledge that families play an important role in the learning experience.
It is irresponsible to claim that schools do not seem serious as long as they keep programs that are currently in order. One should not look at the matter from the perspective of an adult who considers a part-time job to be childish. Individuals need to acknowledge that young people have to spend a significant amount of their time with their families in order for them to be able to integrate society properly. By taking them away from their families at an early age and by making them use the most important part of their time to learn, the educational system is likely to experience significant problems. Simply accumulating information present in the curricula is not the only thing that children should do while in school. They should also be able to learn how to behave properly and how to integrate the social order. It is practically as if Trachtenberg is more supportive of providing children with the ability to learn mechanically than of providing them with the ability to choose what they want to learn and actually be encouraged when they put across constructive attitudes.
Even with the fact that it has a lot of flaws and needs to be constantly improved, the educational system is designed this way for a reason. From the moment when they go to kindergarten for two to four hours per day and until they go to universities and spend a significant part of their day there, young individuals go through a maturing process that makes it possible for them to stay with their families until they are actually ready to experience a healthy integration in the social order.
