The paper looks at the various roles that are played by the organization managers. It further dissects the ten roles that were researched by Henry Mintzberg as figurehead, leader, liaison, monitor, disseminator, spokesperson, entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator and indicates how each is achieved and associated to the role of the manager.
Chief Executive's Tasks
When Mintzberg's model for CEOs is used, the above case study can be observed to have managerial activities that can be categorized into the interpersonal, informational as well as the decision-making roles that were displayed by the concerned manager.
The interpersonal roles that were executed by the manager included the speech that he was to give at the area police academy. The other instance is when he learnt from the communications officer that one of the motorcycle officers was involved in an accident and he went to wish him well in the hospital was an interpersonal role. The ride that the manager was to make in the holiday parade could also be categorized under interpersonal roles and finally the attending of the special ceremony at the city park that honors area law enforcement officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
The informational roles in the case study were noted to be the meeting attended where he met the detectives to get update on the highly publicized kidnapping, summoned by deputy chief of operations; here they were given the latest information concerning the case. There was the other event in the afternoon that he had to hold to inform the public on the latest status of the case. The other informational role is meeting for the Tri-County Regional Major Case Squad, where he discussed the latest intelligence information concerning a ring of circulating slot machines cheaters in his jurisdiction.
The decision-making roles in the above case study were noted to be the incidence where he met with his events staff and other city officials to finalize plans on the security and traffic for the event that was to take place the next day event of fireworks display, here, crucial decisions were going to be made on ways to avert the menace of alcohol-related traffic and fighting arrests as was the case in the previous year. The other instance is the preparation for the July 5th presentation on the need to have a modern 800-megahartz communication system to the city council.
Roles as set of behaviors
According to Proven Models (2012), there are ten identifiable categories that the managerial behaviors can be grouped into which are the figurehead, leader, liaison, monitor, disseminator, spokesperson, entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator. These can be applied in the case study dealt with here.
The roles of the manager as a figurehead involves the ceremonial duties that he performs as well as the symbolic duties that he does as the head of the organization. Among those duties he performed was the speech that he delivered at the police academy, this was a ceremonial duty that he played as well as a symbolic person as the head of the organization.
The leader role is aimed at fostering proper work atmosphere as well as motivating and developing the subordinates. This was seen when the motorcycle officer got involved in an accident and once he was informed by the communications officer he went to the hospital to see him
The liaison role is aimed at developing as well as maintaining the external networks and contact in order to gather information. This was seen when he agreed to go ride in the holiday parade as well as the incident where he agreed to go attend the special ceremony that was organized to honor the officers that were killed in the line of duty.
The monitor role is aimed at gathering any information, be it external or internal that may be for the benefit of the organization. This was seen when the manager attended the meeting that was called by the deputy chief of operations to give updates on the status of the highly publicized kidnapping.
The manager as a disseminator is engaged in transmitting factual information that is value-based to the subordinates and the general public. This was experienced in the case where the manager held a public briefing after meeting the detectives to inform them of the latest revelations on the case.
The manager as a spokesperson has to keep the outside world informed of the factual things and processes going on within the organization or the area of jurisdiction. In the case study above, meeting for the Tri-County Regional Major Case Squad, where he discussed the latest intelligence information concerning a ring of circulating slot machines cheaters in his jurisdiction was a spokesperson role.
