Last reviewed: June 27, 2017 ~4 min read

Civil rights can be delineated as the very basic and fundamental rights to be free from unequal treatment, on the basis of particular attributes that are considered important, for instance gender, race, and also disability. The Bill of Rights protects all citizens of the nation against the infringement of their rights and liberties by any entity and even the state, as it is assured in the Constitution. One of the key civil rights discussed and debated in the United States in the present day encompasses the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning community (LGBTQ) (Newton, 2014).

Describe the observed political event in detail, including the environment and people involved

The event I attended was a political protest that covered the annual gay rights march. In particular, the parade was in search of shedding some light on the gay rights. The individuals that participated in the parade included men, women and teens of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer sexual preference. The celebration was full of pomp and color, with numerous individuals walking down the street in various outfits with banners and posters, dancing and shouting. The environment and setting of the parade was more of a protest rather than the usual celebration perceived in recent years. This is largely for the fact that LBGTQ movement and community have been provoked and incensed by the Trump's Government's rollback of national direction recommending school districts to allow transgender learners make usage of bathrooms as well as locker rooms of their preferred choice. Moreover, the protests were owing to the fact that President Trump also shifted away from the practice undertaken by president Obama of allotting a declaration in honor of Pride Month (The Guardian, 2017).

Describe how the event is directly related to the study of civil liberties or civil rights and how one may better understand these topics by attending a similar event

This event is directly related to the study of civil rights or civil liberties in the sense that it outlines the need for equality amongst all people in the United States and the speech against discrimination. In the contemporary society, LGBTQ people are deprived of numerous of the basic rights that most of the American citizens revel and enjoy. Without a doubt, the LGBTQ movement for full and similar equality has come exceedingly far in a short span, ranging from countrywide marriage equality to LGBT-inclusive hate crimes. Nonetheless, several obstacles continue to prevail and LGBTQ Americans still face discrimination in numerous aspects of their lives (Congressman Polis, 2017).

Make note of any aspects of the event that seemed confusing to you and/or any questions that came to mind during the observation

There are a number of aspects of the event that seemed confusing to me during the observation. One of the aspects was a great extent of resistance within the LGBTQ community. This takes into account the issue that a number of them felt that pride celebrations were focused on gay white men in America and failed to outline and shed light on issues that matter especially to minorities in the LGBTQ movement, for instance policing and economic inequality (The Guardian, 2017). Some of the resistance and division amongst the community is worrying but at the same time ought to be taken into consideration.
