¶ … Threat of Terrorism: Weighing Public Safety in Seattle is an eye opening account of the ever present threat of radical terrorism. The case study presented a result that seems that much luck was involved in preventing any wide scale violence. Most importantly however, this research presented many unanswered questions that lie within finding an appropriate balance between public safety and common sense.
Risk is inherent in life. Life itself hinges upon its ultimate death. We are all on death row one way or another. Safety is preventing a premature death due to negligence and wanton ignorance. But is too much safety a bad thing ? Perhaps the media attention given towards the city of Seattle prior to the millennium celebrations attracted a negative type of energy in the form of Islamic bombing terrorists? What role does responsible journalism and information have in preventing or provoking terrorist acts ?
The importance of research in any particular subject is important because it reveals the finer details of that subject and in turn, makes the information applicable and practical. This is the value of education, learning and experience. Specifically, within the criminal justice system, research has paid big dividends and in turn growth and understanding was gained by the collective environment. The purpose of this capstone project is to discuss the importance of research within the confines of criminal justice and provide a useful of example of how this research has been implemented in a particular aspect of the subject.
Research and Policy
Research contributes to the policy making apparatus within this country in numerous and focused ways Garrison (2009) suggested that "criminal justice researcher can make their work more relevant to criminal justice policy makers by understanding the politics, power and policy dynamics that govern how these agencies operate." In other words, research must be done within the context of real world application in order for it to be meaningful and ultimately practical and effective.
The funneling of information from the academic world to the policy makers is a critical step in ensuring that the integrity and the fidelity of the research is kept intact. Distortion may interfere with the research's intentions if its misinterpreted or deliberately misapplied in the wrong situation. This predicament suggests that strong ethics and morals are needed in this system in order for it to be beneficial for the collective environment. Those who are in leadership positions within this system need to understand their role in keeping honest and frank discussion open within debate and policy making.
