¶ … Love

For centuries, great leaders, entertainers, mothers, teacher and a variety of others have searched for the meaning of love. However, even the best philosophers, with the profound thoughts, could not fully define love.

Perhaps the reason for this is that love is such a broad subject. There are dozens of answers to the question, "What is love?" Love can be selfless, selfish, giving, jealous, unconditional, temporary, and many other things.

People establish relationships with many different types of people, including family members, neighbors, co-workers, friends, spouses, significant others, and more. People have been taught that the love is different depending on whom they love.

The emotion of love is the same regardless of whom it is felt for. Lovers want their loved ones to be happy, accept them as they are, and appreciate some aspect about them. However, even though love is the same, it feels different depending on whom the loved one is.

Love is very complex and dynamic. Different people love in different ways, and there are many types of love, as well. This essay narrows the types of love down to the basic ones.

Types of Love

The first is romantic love. It consists of memories of a first kiss and dancing with someone you simply adore. Romantic love involves constantly thinking about the one you love and going out of your way to be close to them. It is the most heated form of love, as the lovers cannot bear to be without one another. This type of love is the initial stage of a relationship between a man and a woman.

This type of love will either dissolve or take on another form, such as logical love, in which a person selects a mate that he or she believes is Mr. Or Mrs. Right. Ideally, this person will share similar interests, background and values, as well as have a personality that is complimentary to his/her partner.

Some people are satisfied with playing the field and are capable of loving many people. This can be classified as temporary love. Temporary lovers love to pursue challenges and are caught up in the game of seduction.

These people love to date and love new relationships, which mostly consist of romantic love. However, they are not interested in moving on to logical love, as they prefer to make little or no long-term commitment to the other person.

The types of love are not solely dedicated to romantic relationships. There are other types of love that pertain to others, such as best friend or companion love, which some say is the strongest love of all.

In this type of love, people are drawn to one another through companionship and intimacy. This type of love is based on trust and commitment, similar to romantic love, but it does not involve intense excitement, desperation and sexual obsessions.

There is also unconditional love, such as the love that a parent has for a child, in which the lover is completely devoted and self-sacrificing to the one they love. The lover is caring, responsible and loving toward the loved, yet does not expect anything in return.

Conditional love means that you love something or someone but there are conditions for that love to stay. Conditional love is healthier than unconditional love since it allows the lover to set boundaries for themselves and for their loved people to know those boundaries.

People can also love things. Often, people say: "I love my new car." "I love my Dolce & Gabbana shoes." I love strawberry ice cream." This type of love describes an emotion toward something that pleases them or something that they are drawn to.

Obstacles of Love

There are many obstacles to love. One of the main types of barrier is lust, which can be mistaken for loving feelings. Lust is driven by attractions and sexual feelings. In addition, obsession, which makes an individual want to own or control another person, can take the love out of a relationship. Some other types of love busters include perversion, pride, egotism and dependency.

The Basics of Love

Regardless of the type of love, most loving relationships can be classified by three components: intimacy, passion and commitment. Intimacy is the glue that makes lovers feel close to one another. This component consists of feelings of trust, security and self-disclosure. As people get to know each other better, intimacy makes people feel more comfortable talking to each other and opening up.

Passion involves the physical attraction between lovers and the sexual connection it often leads to. Passion is the feeling that makes a person just want to be with each other all the time. This feeling, however, can be similar to infatuation or lust.
