A well-managed classroom is made up of many things, including a positive atmosphere for the students to learn in, strict guidelines and rules, respect, and well-organized classroom materials.

It is not only important for students to be respectful of their classmates and the teacher, but for the teacher to be respectful of the students as well. Students should be held to a high standard of learning, however, teachers should investigate as to why a particular student doesn't seem to be grasping a subject and should strive to solve the issue, rather than making the student feel like he or she is unintelligent or less than the other students.

These aspects of classroom management are equally important and definitely affect the student's ability to learn. Part of classroom management relates to the students' right to feel safe while in a classroom environment. A classroom environment should feel also feel supportive. Feelings of support and safety extend further than protecting against physical violence. When managing a classroom, it's important that there are rules in place to ensure students are respectful of their classmates.

For example, no student should be talking, walking around, sharpening pencils or being disruptive while another student or the teacher is talking. By implementing these types of rules and enforcing them, students (and teacher) feel supported, respected and comfortable that when someone is talking, that individual will be heard. Teachers can meet students' academic needs by meeting their basic needs. This can be accomplished by making the student feel empowered. Again, feelings of safety and empowerment go back to the student feeling safe and respected in class.

Lessons should be well-organized and smooth, so that students feel stimulated and do not become bored throughout the day. When students attend a well-managed classroom it's much more likely that the student will be able to learn what the teacher is teaching them, because they are in an environment created for learning. Classrooms should be inviting, not intimidating, however, they should not be too comfortable either. This ensures that the student has every opportunity to learn the material and doesn't feel like they are visiting a social room.

Some teachers make the mistake of providing too comfortable of a classroom environment for their students, which students find too distracting and the students only want to socialize with other students and the teachers. Regardless of whether or not a teacher occasionally socializes with their students, it's important that the teacher remains a mentor and an authority figure to the students. Nothing should interfere with the process of learning.

That being said, teachers should assess their classrooms from day one in order to pick out any specific details, which may inhibit learning. These details can immediately be changed, whether or not it's the layout of the classroom furniture, the placement of materials, posters on the wall, etc. Teachers should also be aware that a classroom layout may need to be changed after the first day or two (or even month) of the classroom meeting.

Once students become comfortable in their environment, it will be more clearly if there are distractions that will keep some or all of the students from learning. The key to classroom management and how it is related to student ability to learn is the fact that the more distracted the students are, the less likely they are to learn. Classroom management techniques and guidelines are implemented to help students avoid becoming distracted while in class. Students (and the teacher) should walk into class knowing.
