The fakeness of Hollywood

Last reviewed: August 18, 2017 ~6 min read

The author of this brief report has been asked to offer a review of a video that is currently present on the YouTube collection of videos. Rather than providing a simple “shot by shot” review or any other sort of basic review, the author will instead use proper terms, ideas and concepts to get a fuller picture of what the video is trying to accomplish and what methods are being used to accomplish the same in terms of its structure and methodology. There are a number of important factors that will be considered include actual intent, clear intent and what is truly going on within a scene including its narrative, its themes and so forth. While it is possible to read too much into a given scene or the points it is trying to make, there are other times where that is the precise thing that is to be done.
Analysis
The onset of the video clip in question is a rather interesting one. It is a video or movie of people watching a video or movie, with the audience being in a grand theater. One thing that stands out right away is that the movie being watched is in black and white whereas the scene in the theater is in color. While this may have been more of a historical summary of what the norms were at that time, it is something that immediately catches the eye in a modern context. Something else that immediately comes to the eye is the fact that the people in the theater are very well-dressed and ready to impress, something that is not commonly done in modern theaters. Even so, it is not something that is entirely devoid from the paradigm. Just one example would be when people go to movie award shows. That is obviously a different thing in terms of why the people are there. However, the fact that people are watching films and are dressed very well is something that is obviously present when it comes to the Oscars and other such award shows.
Anyhow, the first dialog that is seen in the video clip clearly emanates from some of the people that are depicted in the audience. Another thing to note is that the scenes being depicted are not contiguous. The people involved seem to be the same actor and actress. However, there is first the scene where they are laying together and then there is another scene where they appear to be in a drama/powdered wigs situation and the culmination of the movie is seen. There is then a cut to a scene whereby the people of the film are supposedly there in person and are being congratulated. There is an immediate situation depicted where there is fighting over the money. The female star of the film is obviously making a power play. Concurrent to that, the males (and the female in the pink dress) is rather taken off guard to what the new woman that is supposedly “running things” is actually doing. This all comes to a head, of course, when that same woman continues her pattern of going on for herself by making her own speech.
Analysis
The visible reaction from the fan is rather obvious and immediate. The reason for the reaction, of course, is fairly obvious to the viewer of the movie right away. For those that miss it, the theme that is clearly being brought about is that the way that the woman is depicted in terms of her voice, both when it comes to singing and when it comes to spoken word, is entirely different in the movie than it is in real life. It is so jarring and obvious that the crowd immediately reacts and starts talking amongst themselves about that fact. Almost immediately, the actress’s power play has blown up in her face and she immediately removes herself from the stage to her right and the audience’s left.
All of this happens quite quickly in terms of the duration and path of the video. Indeed, all of the above is completely passed and over by the time that the video is about halfway over. Much of the “power play”, of course, happens in a more constricted time frame. Regardless, the woman in the light-colored dress goes from being drunk with power and ready to seize on an advantage that she feels she has that is in contrast to reality to being in full realization, at least for a moment, that she has overplayed her hand and that perhaps she is in a spot of trouble. In any event, the drama continues when the woman exits off of the stage. The idea of who is in power clearly comes to a head when the first off-state scene is shown. Indeed, it is the men from the prior off-state scene that are seen strategizing and talking amongst themselves. As would be expected, the woman has completely changed the tone and concept of what she was talking about and the man on the far right just plays along with her verbal wringing of her hands by suggesting that a microphone should be fetched so as to assist with the situation that the actress has now gotten herself into.
What becomes obvious almost right away is that the woman in the pink dress, the same woman that was initially depicted at the onset of the scene from the audience, apparently, was the woman that was the “voice” of the actual actress and that they are going to complete the same ruse as was done in the movie itself by doing the same thing for the audience. At the 4:30 mark, this is precisely what is revealed to be the case. Because of the proverbial egg on her face, the actress decides to cooperate. After a very awkward exchange through the curtain, the ruse is in full mation.
Once again, the audience reaction is a sight to behold. Even so, the ruse seems to be working. However, things get really interesting. The men from before decide to embarrass and pillory the actress. They first seem to be just mocking her but then one of them flings open the curtain and put a face to the ruse that is being done. They show that the woman in pink is the real star from the movie in terms of her beautiful voice. The scene ends with the true people behind those voices and passion of the song being on full display.
