Coaching Philosophy:
Coaching is simply defined as training or instructing through the use of different approaches that enable a group of individuals to obtain the optimal performance level. However, the success of this practice is dependent on the establishment and execution of a coaching philosophy. In this case, the philosophy is an attitude or hypothesis held by the coach and his/her group that functions as the operating principle to govern the actions of the group. Therefore, coaching philosophy is described as an attitude or perception held by a coach, which acts as the guideline for motivating a team or group of people towards the realization of the best possible level of performance.
As a passionate young coach, I will promote the growth of my team members through providing numerous opportunities that enable them to assume responsibility, communicate, and be accountable in nurturing their dreams. My work as a coach would not necessarily revolve around winning trophies, gaining power, or fulfilling personal agendas. In contrast, I will focus on molding and nurturing a group of people into a team and motivating them to do and give their best (Burroughs, n.d.). This process will entail teaching the team new skills, how to foster team concept, good decision-making skills, how not to fear failure, character values, and how to achieve success individually and as a group.
My coaching philosophy will be based on certain core values that are necessary for success such as growth, discipline, enjoyment, task-oriented, hard work, fairness, and respect. These core values will be the basis for other activities such as innovation, learning, competition, creativity, trust, and challenge. I will use these core values as the foundation for creating an environment where team members grow, develop, and strive towards realizing their full potential and make significant progress.
While coaching is a challenge itself, I want to get into it because it's my passion, my love of competition, and fear of failure. Through my coaching activities, every team member will develop his/her skill, talents, and abilities by exposing them to a structured environment where he/she learns and is constantly challenged. However, I will provide support and encouragement to each individual in order to provide a strong base for personal and group progress. The exposure to challenging activities will benefit team members to develop the capability of effective decision making and accurate execution even when under pressure. Furthermore, they will develop competency and confidence through the recurring varying drills they undertake while practicing.
I will use individual communication as the means of communicating with players and other members of the coaching staff. This is primarily because many young people operate from an individual perspective as they adopt a group perspective (Guthrie, n.d.). The functioning from an individual perspective not only offers a teaching platform for me as a coach but it also shows the significance of individual communication in this process. In addition, individual communication will also enable highly motivated and committed players and coaching staffs to provide input that promote individual and group development. Individual communication will also be the means for motivating my players because it offers person-centered information. I will also motivate my players by setting some short-term goals in consultation with them in order to give them direction towards accomplishing specific tasks.
