¶ … coaching session was found on YouTube. The name of this session was "Sample Coaching Session with David Rock -- Choose your Focus" (Rock, 2008). In this video David Rock is coaching a female executive who wants to focus on improving her ability to present information to a busy executive who does not have a lot of time to digest information or sit for a formal presentation.

David Rock first states that he is no expert on the topic but that he will help coach the executive by helping her think through the problem. Rock continues to ask a number of probing questions about the top. One question he asks is about the priority of the issue.

The executive states that the problem is not on the top of her list, but the issue is probably in the "top 5." It is incredibly interesting how he is able to frame his questions so that the subject of the coaching is able to "discover" insights about how the perceive the issue. Rock also asks the executive to rate her current ability to give just the right amount of information to superiors and she rates herself a seven out of ten.

She has been practicing for years so she thinks that she is competent in the skill but has some significant room for improvement. He also asks other discovery questions such as how long have you been working on this problem. The executive replies that she has been working on it on and off for about a year and a half. During this period, she has specifically targeted this issue. However, she also stated that she has been practicing the skill for about ten years in a leadership role.

"How often does it come up in your thoughts?" was also one of the questions that were asked and the response to this was every day. By asking these discover questions during the coaching session, the coach was able to get his client to pretty much answer her own questions. With the discovery questions, the client determined that her focus should be mostly on the preparation side of the skill, but should also practice the execution and the follow-up to some degree.

He then asks "do you know what you need to do to prepare better?" And the response is to find more ideas. Rock continues with this line of questioning and gets his client to come up with some more concrete steps that can be taken to improve her performance in regard to the specific skill. I believe this interview is an exceptionally good example of how coaches can use discovery questions to help their clients to find their own solutions.

The GROW model that the book outlines is another example of how coaches can use discovery questioning to better assist their clients (Stoltzfus, p. 29). This acronym stands for goal, reality check, options, and will. By asking discovery questions and going through this model, coaches can help.
