Cold War

During the Cold War era, the United States and the Soviet Union dominated the European political landscape. They also engaged each other ideologically in Korea (Weber, n.d.).

World War II was an enormous theatre. During the war time President Franklin Roosevelt cut out an image for himself. He was capable of articulating false freedom of speech and religion. The last straw that broke the camel's back was when the Japanese Air Armada bombed Pearl Harbor. A couple of days later, Roosevelt, before a joint session, declared war against Japan. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war against the U.S. Nazi invasion of Poland then ensued. Women and children became combatants in the war. Civilians were fired and eventually killed or maimed. In 1937, Pablo Picasso was bombed. At Nanking, the Japanese soldiers short, stabbed, beheaded, and raped non-resistant men, women, and children. In August 1945, the United States marked a new period in the WWII history.

Technology changed the war landscape. They began building ships and tanks. The WWII was the most terrible thing that ever happened in the history of the world relations and politics. At least 50 million people died majority of who were civilians. Six million people died in holocaust. A total of 400, 000 Americans lost their lives. Some Americans were captured as prisoners of war. The Second World War was big in scope and strategy. Commentators do argue that America became prosperous after war. However, going by what E.B. Sledge (Miller & Maier, n.d.), a Corp Marine, says, this can never be true. When Okinawa was invaded, the military command was jittery on the possibility of letting the folks back home knowing what actually transpired at the battle field and how terrible the war was. The soldiers did not twist the truth, they however never told everything by telling as much of what they saw. Automobile companies put their production on hold and instead joined hands in building ships that were used in carrying war cargos. The war was indeed a contest between the skilled German systems against U.S. unskilled system (Miller & Maier, n.d.).

In 1945 the U.S. embarked on producing more firepower. This made the blacks from the South to migrate to the Industrial North where they faced a lot of racial discrimination. Women took part in building bombs and ships. The harrowing experiences the soldiers went through at war made them perpetual drunkards and wife batterers (Miller & Maier, n.d.). They were not capable of keeping their families together. Americans resorted to the use of airpower and they thought would make the war shorter. This culminated into building of B-17 Bomber (Miller & Maier, n.d.) which was thought to be efficient because of its ability to precisely deliver a bomb deep into the enemy territory. However, this plan failed because of recurring cloud cover and heavy enemy resistance. Failure could also be attributed to the crew's battle with cold. The planes were also not pressurized. Pilots passed out due to oxygen deprivation.

Nineteen sixty was a tumultuous decade. On 1.1.1960 a group of students went to a restaurant and demanded to be served coffee. The waiters however told them that they don't serve Negroes. There were black and white demonstrations in Greensboro. Two months later students began to protest against segregation in 54 cities and 9 states where almost 70-000 people participated (Miller & Maier, n.d.). This culminated into President Truman desegregating the armed forces. The movements had more money and federal support. In 1960 Ella Baker formed SNCC with Rev. Martin Luther King as its charismatic leader. The students, clergy, and lay people joined the students in their clamor for change.
