Classroom Management Plan

In my classroom management plan, I intend to integrate several behavioral management theories. First, I would use Skinner’s behavior modification approach, as I believe that positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool in directing student behavior. I also like Lee Canter/Marlene Canter’s “assertive discipline” approach as I believe that as an educator, I have professional rights within the classroom and should expect appropriate student behavior. Boundaries and expectations need to be set. At the same time, I feel strongly about Carl Rogers and H. Jerome Freiberg's “personal-centered classroom” because I want my students to experience a sense of belonging. I want them to actually enjoy the power of self-discipline, and to have fun while learning. That is because I ultimately see education as an experience of freedom and as a learning journey—so it should be enjoyed even if at times it is hard work. But to support that journey I would also implement Paul Gathercoal’s “judicious discipline” approach. It is based on a synthesis of professional ethics. In my class, I will base my rules on the principles of the Constitution, putting emphasis on individual freedom but encouraging students to take ownership of their learning.

The reason I chose to integrate these theories is that they offer a good synthesis of ideas and represent a cohesive and comprehensive approach to classroom management. They include promoting respect, collaboration, and positive reinforcement. I believe that through the combination of the strengths of these theories I can create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and personal growth.

I do believe it is better to be strict with students first and then relax. It is harder to be relaxed and then try to be strict later, because the stage has already been set. The relaxed behavior has already been learned.

Assuming the school where I teach has no standard rule against food or drink, I would allow it with certain conditions. I believe that students should be allowed to bring water bottles, with the understanding that using them should be quiet and not disruptive. However, I would not permit sodas or snacks that can be messy or distracting. Messy and disorderly rooms invite chaos and disorder. I would want everyone to remain focused and ultimately on task—not distracted by snacks and beverages.

The classroom environment obviously plays a big part in student behavior. A room that is full of tension will inevitably cause students to be edgy and irritable. Negative and overly critical comments from the teacher can also cause problems. That is why I very much believe that a teacher should give opportunities for brief relaxation and positive social interaction. Competitive situations should be balanced with collaborative ones to prevent students from feeling like they are constantly pitted against each other. It is all about balance in the end.

Teachers have a very important role to play in shaping student behavior, since they are the example. Sometimes, teachers might inadvertently encourage disruptive behavior by their actions or words, by getting excited in the moment—it is natural. But one should also make a serious effort to be self-aware and avoid behaviors or quirks that might irritate or distract students. Professional development is one thing that can help, and feedback is another.
