Collection Descriptions for Fashion

Fashion Portfolios Dreamland represents the place in the heart where the dreams and wonder of childhood live. I interpret this concept in this collection through my own childhood dreams and fantasies. Dreamland is a time when we walk through a whimsical, wonderful world. The lines between what is real and what is not are blurred. Looking at fashion through the lens of a child's eyes, I have created a collection that exhibits the influences of a time in my life when anything was possible, and nothing was impossible.

Woven into this collection are fantasy themes. Princesses, magical creatures and other fantasy elements are represented throughout. These elements showcase the beauty of the world in a way that is not conceivable in a literal world. But by using childlike imagination, the pieces have the ability to transport the wearer and the audience into another realm, recalling innocence and spectacle. In keeping with the theme of dreams, elements mix with each other to create unique combinations of color and texture.

This collection speaks to the little girl that lives in the heart of every woman. We all want to close our eyes and imagine luxury, and the idea that whatever we can dream of, we can have it. Where fantasy and luxury intersect is one of the most vibrant places in all of fashion, and it is something to which many women aspire.

Philosophically, this collection showcases my most whimsical, childlike soul, free from the obligations and self-censorship of adulthood, and all its stresses; truly, a return to a careful world. Layers of Consciousness reflects the different personalities that each person has. People are quirky, strange and multifaceted. Many people compartmentalize their wardrobes -- work clothes, street clothes, evening clothes, vacation clothes. These compartments reflect the many different lives we lead, the different selves that walk through these lives.

The idea behind Layers of Consciousness is that we all have different selves, and yearn for ways to express all of our different selves within the whole. The inspiration for this project was The Flat Side of the Knife by Samara Golden, which I saw at Moma PS1. In this exhibition, Golden explores human consciousness, in particular its many sides. She interprets this in her own ways, through reflections, the illusion of space, through deconstruction.

This inspiration is reflected in Layers of Consciousness, in the way that the garments can be light and airy, or heavy and brooding; each garment reflecting a different element of my consciousness. I drew upon my own self, and the different elements that comprise myself, to create these visions, reflecting on who I was when I created each piece. The collection as a whole can be said to represent the different layers of my consciousness, put together to form a whole, cohesive work.

The theme of deconstruction was central, and the garments reflect my desire to break down the different layers of consciousness into individual elements to be explored. Examining a person as a set of layers rather than as a whole entity is a brave concept, challenging how we normally perceive one another. This is reflected in the garments as deconstructed elements are spun into multiple themes that represent as a whole.

An intense and personal collection, Layers of Consciousness allows the wearer to reflect the layer that she feels at a given point in time, expressing a part of a whole, and in that way making a stronger statement than simply expressing a whole where individual elements can be obfuscated -- clothes with clarity and purpose reflecting each layer of our selves. Transcend is rooted in the trend towards activewear. It is reflection of current trends towards healthier living, trends that ironically are emerging in the world's biggest cities.

People seek simpler experiences, they seek the authentic, and the boutique. Transcend is for people who seeks out local-sourced foods, free from GMOs, for people who value fitness and fresh air as much as they value an active social life. Transcend is for the modern urban dweller, dedicated to living better in all facets of life.
