Comcast Practicing What They Preach Essay

Comcast Review The author of this report has been asked to complete a brief review of Comcast Corporation from a strategic management standpoint. This review will include a look at and an analysis of their mission/vision statements, the company's primary stakeholders, whether the aforementioned mission/vision statements are in line with the needs of the stakeholders, whether the organization treats their stakeholders properly as compared to their needs or the mission/vision statement and whether the values are in line with the volatile market within which Comcast competes.

In looking at the mission/vision section of the Comcast website, a few things become apparent. First of all, the broader company that Comcast inhabits is quite large and the amount of stakeholders would be rather huge. Indeed, Comcast is actually owned by NBC and NBC Universal. This would mean that a single company includes multiple arms and sections that all affect a lot of people. One arm would be the news wing which would include NBC Network News, CNBC and MSNBC. Next up would be the entertainment wing of NBC. Lastly, we come to Comcast which is the largest cable company in the nation. However, there are some other big players in the market as well. Indeed, Comcast is a solid first place with 112 million subscribers and they have a presence in forty states. Time Warner is a distant second with 68 million subscribers and they are in twenty-nine states. Charter Communication is even further behind with thirty million subscribers but they also inhabit twenty-nine states. Fourth would be Cox Communications with 22 million subscribers and they exist in only eighteen states (Broadband Now, 2015).

As for Comcast as a company in particular, they values they state are listed on the website. Of course, stated value and underlying values can be the same and they might be different. The reason is that not all companies practice what they preached when it comes to the values that they say...

...

Even so, the author of this report will first focus on what Comcast says it believes in. The Comcast wing of NBC is made up of several major sections and realms. They include technology, television, internet access, internet essentials, communications, mobile and home. They also dedicate a lot of resources to things like their business wing of operations and their advertising efforts. They also have what is known as the Comcast Foundation which has contributed about $158 million USD to help "strengthen the communities we serve" (Comcast, 2015). They report that they invest in programs and non-profit agencies that help with things like the expansion of digital literacy, the promotion of community service and the building of tomorrow's leaders and visionaries (Comcast, 2015).
When it comes to the values that Comcast espouses, they have four main dimensions that they speak to on their values page. Those sections are community investment, diversity and inclusion, the environment and integrity. Now that these have been identified, the stakeholders of Comcast should be identified. First of all would be the corporate bigwigs at NBC that are ultimately in control of what Comcast does. There are also the managers and executives that manage Comcast in particular. Third, there would be the employees that work at Comcast around the country or even the world if they happen to have any foreign employees. To this date, Comcast Corporation is traded as a public company on the NASDAQ exchange. One proverbial elephant that is in the room as far as Comcast goes is that many decry the fact that a single broader corporation (NBC/Comcast) has both a media channel to show their wares but they are also a provider that extends the service to the end users. In the eyes of many, those two should never intersect in the same company but it is absolutely happening when it comes to NBC/Comcast (Yahoo Finance, 2015).

With all of that being said, the author of this report…
