Brief History of Hempstead Village
The Reverend Robert Fordham and John Carman rowed across Long Island Sound in 1643 to negotiate with several Native American tribes (Massapequak, Mericoke, Rockaway and Matinecock) about buying land for a village. Subsequently, in the 1800s, Hempstead Village became a trading center and by 1853 it became incorporated as a village. Such notables from the American Revolution as George Washington enjoyed staying in Hempstead Village. The population of Hempstead Village skyrocketed after World War I, because many people in the City of New York preferred the suburban lifestyle (villageofhempstead.org).
Hempstead Village Facts -- Demographics & Poverty Rate
Today, according to the U.S. Census, the there are approximately 55,527 (as of 2014) residents in this town of 3.7 square miles. African-Americans make up an estimated 48.3% of the population in Hempstead Village; Caucasians make up 21.9%; Asians make up just 1.4%; Latinos comprise 44.2% (U.S. Census). The percentage of persons living under the poverty level is approximately 20.5% (compared with New York State, which has 15.3% living below the poverty level). The percentage of residents with income below 50% of the poverty level in 2013 was 9.1% (www.city-data.com). There are approximately 14,636.3 persons per square mile in Hempstead Village, an indication of the concentration of people; in New York State there are just 411.2 persons per square mile (U.S. Census).
While only 10.4% of all businesses in New York State are owned by African-Americans, in Hempstead Village 30.6% of businesses are black-owned. Twenty-three percent of businesses in Hempstead Village are owned by Latinos (U.S. Census).
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia (STDs) is reported to be the most frequent of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. The bacteria that is associated with Chlamydia is called Chlamydia trachomatis, and is somewhat similar to gonorrhea (medicinenet.com). One very interesting fact about Chlamydia is that men and women that are infected don't necessarily have any symptoms and hence, they may not even be aware they are infected. Unlike genital herpes, which has outbreaks that are disturbing and often painful, Chlamydia is generally hidden ("silent") and only detectable through a specific screening, which can be done at the Hempstead Community Health Center (135 Main Street). The Community Health Center provides screening for Chlamydia Tuesdays, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
That having been said, while a woman may not be aware she has a Chlamydia condition, this infection " ... can cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes ... and can lead to future infertility and an increased risk of ectopic (when a fertilized egg lodges itself away from the main cavity of the uterus) pregnancy" (medicinenet.com).
