¶ … company or organization can survive without comprehending the complexity of communications needs. Several years of professional experience in marketing and business communications prepared me for the challenges inherent in the development and implementation of effective communication strategies. It is my ability to analyze, strategize, and foresee the needs of a company or organization that led me to rewarding positions in marketing and communications. Yet a need to update my skill set and advance my career prompts me to apply for the Master of Science in Strategic Communications at Columbia University. My goals in becoming a strategic communications leader or executive can be met with the credentials of the program. The creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills I glean from the coursework will enable me to effectively help businesses to succeed.
Strategic communications and effective public relations formed the hallmark of all my recent professional positions. My job as Assistant Account Executive first introduced me to the particulars of the marketing and advertising industries. This paved my way for future employment as Senior Account Manager and team leader, during which I practiced consulting and business to client communications. I was also able to experiment with marketing research, something that tempts me as a focus for future study. Collaboration both with fellow account executives and with clients led me to an appreciation for the intricacies of professional communications. Business communications proved to be challenging and rewarding; currently I am a Global Marketing Communications Associate for an Internet corporation. My current duties include management of multiple accounts and projects as well as optimizing all forms of communications. I write, edit, and prepare presentations, demo scripts, web site content, product data sheets, case studies, and brochures, as well as materials for seminars and trade shows. My hands-on experience with working with traditional and new media will merge well with the academic focuses of the Masters in Strategic Communications.
Exposure to the IT industry stimulated my interest in further exploration of the potential for new technologies to facilitate corporate and client relations. Being able to amalgamate creative, technological, and professional communication media will be one of my main focus points in the future. I hope to learn more about marketing research and to be able to create persuasive presentations of the findings of that research. Marketing recommendations and consultation are also parts of my future career goals. Strategizing the various needs of businesses includes being able to recommend a synthesis of solutions; I hope to comprehend fully the gamut of communications options available for businesses today. I also hope to keep abreast of the changing needs of companies and organizations and to be able to identify and solve potential problems.
