Parenting Approaches:

The impact of parents in the development of a child has been an issue of great interest for developmental psychologists. This has led to the discovery of different parenting styles and the impacts they have on children. In most cases, parenting styles differ because of various reasons like parental background, family size, education level, culture, socioeconomic status, religion and personality. Notably, individual parents may have different parenting styles which normally combine to produce a unique blend in the family. Some of the most common parenting styles include the following:

Authoritative Parenting:

In this parenting style, parents usually establish rules and regulations which they expect their children to adhere to though the parents are much more democratic. However, when children fail to follow the established rules or guidelines, parents tend to be more forgiving and nurturing than punishing.

Authoritarian Parenting:

As parents establish strict rules or guidelines for their children to follow in this style of parenting, they never explain the reason for setting up such rules. In this case, parents are usually non-responsive to their children and punish them when they fail to follow the established rules or guidelines.

Similarities between the two:

While the above parenting approaches are diverse in nature with divergent impact on the child's development, they have several similarities including & #8230;

Establishment of Strict Rules:

The established rules or guidelines in these parenting styles act as the bases with which parents guide and evaluate their children.

Impact on Child Development:

The other major similarity between these two approaches of parenting is the impact or result they produce in child development. Since they are both demanding parenting styles, these two parenting styles are likely to result in children who are obedient and successful.

Differences between the two:

Though the two parenting approaches may be closely linked, they also have evident differences including & #8230;

Responsiveness to Children:

The major difference between the two approaches to parenting is their responsiveness to children especially with the established rules. Whereas authoritarian parents don't explain the reason for establishing rules, authoritative parents are normally responsive and willing to listen to their children. In authoritative parenting, parents are usually assertive but not restrictive and intrusive while authoritarian parents are assertive, intrusive and restrictive.
