Nursing Ethics and Expectations

Nursing ethics, diversity, global health policy, and social justice are all essential components of the professional development of nurses. Nurses need to understand and integrate these aspects into their nursing practice so as to improve the quality of care they provide and to make sure their practice aligns with social goals regarding health equity and social justice (Wakefield et al., 2021). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has outlined core competencies for professional nursing education. This reflection discusses how Domains 1, 3, 7, and 9 from the Essentials framework contribute to a nurse's professional growth.

Domain 1: Knowledge for Nursing Practice

Domain 1 emphasizes the integration, translation, and application of disciplinary nursing knowledge and interdisciplinary knowledge, including liberal arts and sciences (AACN, 2021). This domain focuses on the importance of clinical judgment in nursing practice. Knowledge for Nursing Practice is what gives nurses a foundation of understanding of nursing as a scientific discipline. This knowledge is informed by nursing history, theories, and the scientific method (i.e., evidence-based practice). This foundation supports the development of clinical judgment as well as investigation into innovative solutions to contemporary problems.

Domain 1 necessarily, therefore, puts emphasis on the importance of evidence-based practice. When they are current with the latest research and integrating evidence into practice, nurses can provide patient care that is based on the best available information. Nurses should be committed to lifelong learning and professional development for this reason. They should also have a sense of the ethical principles that apply to nursing practice so that they can contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession in a morally acceptable manner.

As a nurse, having a good knowledge base allows for better clinical decision-making and patient care. This domain thus encourages nurses to be intellectually curious, honest, and socially responsible practitioners. Applying knowledge from various disciplines lets nurses develop holistic patient care practices that assess the physical aspects of health along with the psychological, social, and environmental aspects (AACN, 2021).

Domain 3: Population Health

Domain 3 focuses on population health, including everything from public health prevention to disease management (AACN, 2021). It looks at the importance of collaborative activities with traditional and non-traditional partners to improve equitable population health outcomes. Population health involves understanding the healthcare needs of different populations and developing strategies to address those needs effectively.

Domain 3 also includes the ability to assess and address health disparities within communities. Through the identification of vulnerable populations and understanding the social determinants of health, nurses can develop targeted interventions to improve health outcomes (Phillips et al., 2020). Collaboration with community organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders can help to create sustainable health initiatives.

Nurses can advocate for policies that impact population health locally and globally, and thus this domain emphasizes the need for a population health perspective in responding to public health emergencies, disasters, and pandemics. Focusing on population health is what allows nurses to contribute to health equity and improved health outcomes for all populations, as they are better able to address social determinants of health and systemic inequities (AACN, 2021).

Domain 7: Systems-Based Practice

Domain 7 addresses the need for nurses to respond to and lead within complex healthcare systems (AACN, 2021). This domain involves understanding organizational structures, financial and payment models, and the impact of local, regional, national, and global regulations on patient outcomes. Systems-Based Practice is essential for ensuring safe, quality, and equitable care for diverse populations. However, in addition to navigating healthcare systems, Domain 7 emphasizes the importance of quality improvement and patient safety initiatives (AACN, 2021). Nurses should see themselves as an integral part of the process of identifying areas for improvement within healthcare settings and implementing evidence-based strategies to improve care delivery. This would involve understanding and using technology and data analytics to monitor and improve patient outcomes (AACN, 2021).

Nurses have to be adept at coordinating resources, predicting changes, and employing improvement strategies within healthcare systems. This domain also shows the need for addressing structural racism and systemic inequities in healthcare. Nurses have to be ready to advocate for and implement changes that improve care delivery and outcomes for all patients.

Domain 9: Professionalism

Domain 9 focuses on the formation and cultivation of a sustainable professional identity, reflecting nursing's values of integrity, altruism, inclusivity, compassion, and social justice. Professionalism involves developing emotional intelligence, engaging in social justice, and demonstrating ethical behavior in decision-making and actions (AACN, 2021).

Nursing professionalism is a continuous process of socialization, requiring nurses to mentor and develop others in the profession. In this domain, a nurse realizes the value of accountability, having a collaborative disposition, and comportment that aligns with nursing's mission to society. Through the upholding of these values, nurses can advocate for the best interests of individuals, communities, and the profession, fostering a practice environment that promotes ethical behavior and social justice.
