¶ … Complain Effectively The act of complaining has many negative connotations which distract from the notion that complaining effectively is an art that every person can develop and refine. Simply put, to complain is to tell someone that you are unhappy with a particular service, product, or behavior. Whether you are interested in complaining to a retail establishment, a political organization, or to an individual person about a personal matter, there are several simple steps which can ensure that your voice is properly, and appropriately, heard.

Although there are a wide variety of situations where one might register a complaint, for the purposes of this essay I will discuss the art of complaining about a product. Rest assured, these steps can be easily applied to any number of different circumstances. The primary mistake that many people make when complaining is to allow their emotions to overwhelm what they are trying to say.

It is easy to get upset when a product or service does not live up to expectations; however, if you try to complain by yelling, using strong language, or taking an argumentative approach, it is unlikely that the person you are directing your complaints to will feel sufficiently motivated to help you. This list can be especially helpful in organizing the order of events, your specific problems with the product, and any steps you might have taken to resolve these problems on your own.

Additionally, this list may come in handy should you have to write a formal letter of complaint to the company in question, as it will document all of the necessary information in an orderly fashion. A small amount of research is also necessary before you actually complain to a specific person. It is important to determine where and with whom you can most effectively direct your complaint.

For example, if you bought a defective toaster at a hardware store, you would likely return to that same store to register your complaint. If, however, you have tried to return the toaster to the hardware store and met nothing but resistance from the store manager, then you might wish to move the complaining process higher up the ladder. Perhaps the hardware store is part of a larger chain, or the manager has a boss at a corporate office who can help solve your issue.

Additionally, by determining who you should speak to, you will also find out how you should speak to them. Some companies have specific customer service or complaint departments or, in other cases, you may have to be more creative and resourceful. By having prepared yourself to complain, you have helped to ensure that your.
