¶ … Republican - Retelling of "The Good Samaritan"
In a certain inner-city neighborhood, a young man was walking home from a gay rights rally. Although he wanted to make it home before dark, a friend had asked him to coffee in a local cafe, and because the friend had serious matters to discuss, the young man assented. Now, he walked home, juggling his backpack and rally sign, and nervously looking behind him.
Suddenly, three gang members jumped on the young man from behind. One held a gun to his head and took his belongings; one knocked him to the ground and removed his shoes and wallet; and the last beat his body and face. Assuming the young man was dead, they rolled him into a gutter near the sidewalk and quickly left with his possessions.
The young man remained unconscious throughout the quit night. With early morning came a few cars, but no pedestrians, and as the young man was not visible from the street, his likelihood of being found alive was slim. A few moments later, a woman came bustling by on foot. Dressed professionally, she wore a campaign button for the local Democratic candidate. As she walked by his gutter, she saw the young man, and quickly hopped off the sidewalk to the street.
I'd like to help you," she said, "but I'm late to the office, and my candidate has a large gay rights speech to deliver today. I hope you remember my candidate next November as he really stands for people like you." few moments later, a social service volunteer hastened down the sidewalk. When he saw the young man, he paused for a moment and shook his head.
I'm really trying to rid this city of people like you," he said, shaking his head. "Sleeping in the streets shouldn't be an option. I wish there was something I could do, but I'm late to help society."
