Motivation the Desire to Attended

Last reviewed: November 17, 2010 ~3 min read

¶ … Motivation

The desire to attended college is a complex assortment of variant motivations. The desire therefore is a composite of several strains of forces that push the individual to complete high school and then apply to a university. Some types of motivation are very obvious and easy to identify, others are more subtle and it is difficult to determine their contribution to decision making. Once the decision is made another set of motivations are introduced to keep you at the particular task that will bring success. While internal motivation is possibly the most powerful, external motivational forces are present to buttress the internal. The motivation to apply to college is therefore a fusion of the two; it is blended.

The internal motivational forces that have fuel the drive to college are manifold. There is the simple desire to attain knowledge. This desire to attain knowledge is not for the purpose of acquiring status or passing any exam but for the sheer unbridled pleasure of knowing. The learning process is a beautiful experience. When the mind is expanded the individual grows almost exponentially. Learning is a destination by it-self. The sublime pleasure of allowing the mind to ruminate over some knotty issue, and then resolving the conundrum satisfactorily is surpassed by few experiences. Learning is therefore a source of deep and lasting motivation.

Another internal source of motivation is personal accomplishment. While there is almost an external side to personal accomplishment it remains truly internal. There is a thrill that bathes the soul when you accomplish something you aspired to achieve. This thrill is at times inexplicable to another and is only apprehended by those who have themselves accomplished. It is not the pleasing of parents or the attainment of subsequent employment that drives this approach. Rather, it is the personal knowledge that against the odds and through difficult trials you are able to succeed. You fought with yourself and you were victorious. There is nothing comparable to it.
