This essay examines the dual nature of computer technology's impact on modern society through a comprehensive advantages and disadvantages framework. The analysis explores five key benefits including improved workplace productivity, enhanced access to information, streamlined communication, increased convenience, and medical advances. Conversely, it addresses five significant drawbacks: employment displacement, cybersecurity threats, moral degradation, reduced creativity, and negative health impacts, particularly on mental wellbeing.
There is no doubt that computers are considered one of the most innovative technologies of our time. As a matter of fact, computer technology has revolutionized all aspects of our lives – from the way we relate with one another, to the way we gather information, to the way we travel and even entertain ourselves. It would, however, be prudent to note that although computer technology has without doubt been beneficial to us on multiple fronts, it does have a number of downsides. People should be aware of these advantages and downsides so as to make effective use of computer technology.
To begin with, I like the way computers have improved productivity and efficiency in most workplaces. It is an undeniable fact that computer technology is more accurate in the performance of certain tasks than human beings. They could also be less prone to errors than humans in various industrial and analytical processes. Next, computers have also eased access to knowledge. For instance, today – unlike was the case many years ago – I can easily retrieve just about any information I desire from the internet. Computer technology has also made it possible for us to connect and communicate in more advanced and efficient formats, i.e. via email and social media. Computer technology has also brought with itself unrivalled convenience on various fronts, i.e. in relation to shopping from the convenience of our homes. Lastly, thanks to computer technology, humanity has registered some wins on the health front, i.e. when it comes to more advanced disease diagnostic procedures.
However, one key downside of computer technology happens to be loss of employment. Thousands of people have lost their jobs as computers take over most processes and functions that were formerly performed by humans at the workplace. Next, there are also concerns about the impact that certain aspects of computer technology has on our health and wellbeing. For instance, with regard to mental health, some studies have found that social media (a platform made possible by computer technology) could have a negative impact on the mental health of persons. More specifically, in the words of Karim, Oyewande, Abdalla, Ehsanullah, and Khan, (2020), “social media envy can affect the level of anxiety and depression in individuals” (112). Third, computer technology has resulted in an increase in certain crimes such as fraud, i.e. thanks to the ease of executing an identity theft scheme. It could also be argued that computer technology has, to some extent, resulted in the further decay of the moral fabric. This is more so the case given that the said technology plays a facilitative role in access to pornographic material, etc. Lastly, computer technology also lacks the creativity and flexibility of human beings – i.e. in as far as the performance of certain tasks is concerned.
