Leadership Ethics of Elon Musk

Introduction

Elon Musk is the founder of SpaceX and The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company. Previously, he co-founded Tesla Motors, where he is currently the CEO. He also co-founded Neuralink, a company that is developing brain-computer interfaces, and he founded OpenAI, a non-profit research company devoted to advancing artificial intelligence in a responsible way. Musk is known for his bold leadership style and for his unconventional approach to business. Musk has also been praised for his vision and ambition, as well as his commitment to ethics and safety. He has been listed by Forbes as one of the most powerful people in the world, and Time magazine has named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world (Moskowitz, 2022). Musk is a highly respected figure in the business world, and he is known for his innovative thinking and his dedication to making technology that will make a difference in the world. However, Musk has also been controversial at times, facing criticism for his business practices and his personal life. This paper will discuss the leadership ethics of Elon Musk, with particular respect to the recent disclosure of an illicit relationship with a subordinate at Neuralink who also worked under him at Tesla.

Musk’s Most Recent Scandal and the Meaning of Leadership Ethics.

Musk has a lot of scandals behind him—from tweeting about taking Tesla private to being sued for defaming a cave diving hero—but his most recent scandal may be the one that really brings into focus what it means to have leadership ethics. Leadership ethics refer to the moral principles that guide a leader’s decision-making and actions (Northouse, 2021). These principles help leaders to act in ways that are beneficial to both individuals and groups, while also adhering to codes of conduct and legal regulations. While there is no definitive list of leadership ethics, common principles include honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect for others. By adhering to these principles, leaders can create an ethical workplace culture and build trusting relationships with employees, customers, and other stakeholders. In turn, this can lead to improved communication, increased productivity, and greater overall success for the organization.

Ethical leadership is based on the belief that leaders have a responsibility to act in ways that are morally upright and just. This type of leadership is often contrasted with leadership that is based solely on self-interest or power. While all leaders must make decisions that balance the interests of various stakeholders, ethical leaders prioritize the common good over personal gain. In doing so, they set an example for others to follow and help create a climate of trust and cooperation. Ultimately, leadership ethics is about using one’s power and influence for the greater good (Northouse, 2021).

Leaders should not, in other words, use their influence and power to have improper sexual relationships with subordinates. In fact, this is essentially what much off the Me Too Movement was about: leaders using their power to push subordinates toward giving sexual favors (Clair et al., 2019). Such behavior is not only unethical but it also creates a conflict of interest in the workplace environment and can harm the company (Clair et al., 2019). Yet Musk appears to have used his power and influence to form an improper sexual relationship with a subordinate at Neuralink and Tesla—a subordinate who, moreover, went on to give birth to his offspring (Shrivastava, 2022).

Elon’s personal history is important to consider when framing the situation in its proper context. In 2008, Musk married Justine Wilson, with whom he has five children. The couple divorced in 2016, and Musk subsequently began dating the Canadian singer Grimes. However, it was his relationship with the technology investor Shivon Zilis that raised the most eyebrows. The two met in 2002, when Zilis was working as Musk’s subordinate at one of his companies. Over the next decade, their relationship would become increasingly complex and controversial. Some have claimed that Musk manipulated and exploited Zilis in order to further his own career; others have said that their relationship was consensual and that Musk was a supportive partner. Regardless of the truth, it is clear that Elon Musk’s relationship with Shivon Zilis was one of the most unusual and scrutinized relationships in recent memory (Safronova, 2022). Being one of the world’s richest people, Musk should have taken more care to conduct himself in a manner befitting his role as CEO—especially in the light of the Me Too Movement, which has seen CEOs lose their jobs for similar conduct.

What Should an Ethical Leader Do?

In a situation wherein a romantic relationship forms between the leader and a subordinate, a leader must be careful not to break the workplace code of conduct and not to create a conflict of interest. If the leader feels the relationship is important, he should report the relationship to HR and let the company proceed in its best interest. The company might choose to transfer the subordinate, or take even more drastic measures. The leader might be asked to resign. A leader who wants to maintain the romantic relationship must accept such consequences because the company has to look after its own interests first—and it cannot allow the risk of a conflict of interest growing between the leader and a subordinate.

What are some of the risks? One potential risk is that the leader begins to favor the subordinate’s interests more than the company’s. The leader, thus divided, fails to put the company first. Some question about Musk’s conflicts of interest regarding his recent relationship should be in order. After all, leaders have duties to stakeholders and stockholders. They must satisfy them in terms of results but also in terms of setting a good example. Ethical leaders are those who lead by example, demonstrating ethical behavior and expecting the same from their followers. For that reason, ethical leadership requires a strong commitment to doing what is right, even when it is difficult. According to duty ethics (or deontology), ethical leaders have a moral obligation to act in accordance with the duty required of them. This means that they should make decisions based on what they are asked to do based on their position, even if it means sacrificing their own interests (Northouse, 2021). In addition, ethical leaders must be honest and transparent in their dealings, always behaving with integrity. By adhering to these principles, ethical leaders can help to create a more ethical workplace and society—but they cannot do this if their attention is divided or given to some other person.

Why It is a Problem

The problem with Musk’s relationship being revealed is that it raises big questions about his personal character and whether he is someone who can be trusted as a leader. Employees may find that working for him is something they do not want to do. Simply from a conventional morality point of view, a leader has to conform to social standards and demonstrate interpersonal accord (Northouse, 2021). Musk did not do this when he entered into a romantic relationship with a subordinate. The Me Too Movement launched a new social standard in which leaders in positions of authority in companies were to be held accountable for their actions; i.e., no more sexual harassment or using their positions of power to manipulate people into having sexual relationships with them. While it is unknown whether Musk did this with Zilis, the fact that it was never disclosed to HR suggests that the relationship was at best illicit and a potential conflict of interest for the companies involved.

Musk apparently does not operate from a traditional utilitarian, deontological or virtue ethics system. He embraces ethical egoism, which is the idea that one’s actions can be justified so long as they benefit the self in some way (Northouse, 2021). It is a very subjective and non-universal approach to morality. Yet it is the ethical perspective that best characterizes Musk: he does not demonstrate a sense of trying to avoid conflicts of interest, as his relationship with Zilis went on for years (Shrivastava, 2022). Musk may also be said to represent the dark side of leadership, which is when leaders become destructive. Musk has shown himself to be somewhat reckless in his personal choices and as a leader; he is currently being sued by Twitter and is constantly being sued by shareholders for various issues related to his actions, whether they are buying Solar City to bail out his brother, or engaging in securities fraud to manipulate the price of Tesla’s stock. Musk seems to embody the dark side of leadership, having let his power and authority go to his head. His relationship with Zilis and the fathering of more children with her shows he has no regard for ethical codes of conduct at his own companies: the rules may be there for others but he does not see himself as one who must abide by them. There is also the problem of his disregard for standards and norms. He used Twitter to publicly justify his relationship with Zilis by joking that he was trying to address the problem of global under-population.

The Solution

Accountability is what is needed most by leaders. Accountability is a key element of ethical leadership. Leaders who are ethical are accountable for their own actions and decisions, as well as the actions and decisions of their followers. They take responsibility for their own behavior, as well as the impact of their behavior on others. Furthermore, ethical leaders are transparent in their decision-making and communication with followers. They provide clear reasons for their decisions and openly share information that is relevant to followers. They do not try to hide their actions or keep them from HR when there is a duty to report. Leaders who are ethical also encourage followers to hold them accountable by creating an environment where dissent is valued and constructive criticism is welcomed. In sum, ethical leaders hold themselves accountable in order to earn the trust and respect of their followers (Northouse, 2021).

In order for Musk to become an ethical leader, he must accept accountability for his actions and hold himself accountable. If he is going to be a leader at Tesla, Neuralink and all his other companies, he must not abuse his position of authority. Leaders who abuse their authority make headlines every day. It\\\\\\\'s a sad reality that some people in positions of power take advantage of their status to exploit others. This abuse can take many forms, from sexual harassment to embezzlement. Unfortunately, when leaders abuse their authority, it can damage the very foundations of their organizations. In addition to causing harm to those who are directly affected by the abuse, it can also erode public trust and confidence in the organization. For these reasons, it is essential that leaders avoid abusing their authority and do away with destructive leadership practices.
