Of all the great thought leaders in design and technology that are living today or who have passed on, George Lucas would best represent the IADT Online campus library. His many accomplishments in digital design techniques, special effects, filmmaking and technology have revolutionized film making over the last 39 years since his first feature film, THX-1138 was produced and 36 years since American Graffiti launched Mr. Luca's career as critically acclaimed filmmaker. Since then, his career continues to be a progression of exceptional creative accomplishment combined with brilliant use of design and technology elements to create vibrant, engaging characters and entire worlds that envelope the senses of audiences.

Qualifications

Of the many accomplishments that qualify Mr. Lucas as spokesperson for the library, perhaps his greatest is the wealth of design concepts, filmmaking techniques and technologies, and animation techniques for complex character development that are considered the best in the industry today (Carse, 1). His contributions to the ancillary fields of computer graphics, animation, digital rending and three-dimensional modeling and motion have been recognized by the National Computer Graphics Association (NCGA) as being the catalyst of innovation across all related industries (Carse, 1). With thirty years of lessons learned from the Star Wars series of films alone, Mr. Lucas and his development teams have infused more innovation into the design industry than decades of previous work had accomplished (Lisanti, L2, L3). His achievements in design and technology have transcended how animation is done and led to a redefining of the cinematic experience as it relates to entirely virtual worlds, from Star Wars to the many collaborations on science fiction films with Steve Spielberg and other leading filmmakers.

Because of all these accomplishments, Mr. Lucas has a list of accolades and awards that would fill pages. His most notable accomplishments however have been the 24 films he has been directly involved with that have either won or been nominated for Academy Awards. He has won four Academy Awards personally for Best Directing and Best Writing for American Graffiti and Best Directing and Writing for Star Wars as well. One of the several companies he has founded, Industrial Light & Magic, has won fourteen Academy Awards on its own. He has also been awarded two of the most prestigious honors in filmmaking in the U.S., the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award and from the Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Mr. Lucas also donated $180M to his alma mater, University of Southern California, so a new film school could be built. He is also the only filmmaker in the U.S. To ever receive the National Medal of Technology, the nations' highest award for technological contributions and leadership.
