Cooperation is the default mental state of the human mind. A young baby will perish without the cooperation of others. It is an inherent trait within the way we can manage our way through this world, and when collaboration and cooperation are absent, strife, confusion and general unpleasantness is sure to follow. The purpose of this essay is to describe how my school environment uses and approaches the idea of collaboration as it applies to diverse learners. This ideas will be expanded upon by also discussing the how parents and community members contribute to this idea. This essay will conclude with comments on how schools and teachers can enhance collaborative learning environments that are supportive and breach the principles of education.

Diverse Learners' Social Emotional Needs

It is important to understand that diverse learners' emotions and the emotions of everyone else are no different. We all hurt, smile, cry and laugh. What is important however, in the social emotional needs of diverse learners is how to communicate and receive communication about emotions. My school environment, is blessed to have open minded faculty who understand this concept and do not pity a diverse learner, but rather look at it a unique challenge to reach out to these students in different ways that improves the system.

Parents' and Community's Role

While it would be nice and easy to have the entire support of the parental and surrounding communities in an education system, it simply will not happen. This tension and stress between the school and the rest of community is needed and should be embraced. Involvement by the parents is what is most important in these situations. School systems need collaboration on all fronts, and if that collaboration comes in the form of disagreement and argument so be it. When parents and the rest of the community tune out, something much worse is happening to lessen the quality of the learning environment.
