The essay is based on the challenges that are faced currently by the managers in correctional institutions. The three challenges outlined here are the aspect or terrorism and the radicalization of the lesser radical prisoners by the very radical prisoners. The second issue looked at is the mental illness among inmates and finally the issue of self harm infliction.
¶ … Correctional Managers
The contemporary policing is very different from the policing system in the last two decades, this is due to the changes that have taken place across the globe on the types of crimes that are witnessed. Consequently the type of criminals who are confined in our penitentiaries are radically different from those of the yester years, hence the need to have a totally different system of correction administration as well. This then comes with the challenges that the correctional administration are bound to face every now and then.
Since there are quite a number of terrorists and the terror propagators that are of late held within the U.S.A. correctional facilities, it is true then that this comes as a new challenge to the correctional managers.
In this regard, the managers are looked upon to ensure that the correction facilities are be equipped with specialists in the field of interrogation, those who know how to read the behaviors of criminals so as to act as a facilitation to the FBI in the process of gathering information that is important in the fight against terror. It is important to remember that it is within the incarcerations that the hardcore criminal and terrorists are held hence the capability of the correction department to handle them different from the other criminals must be provided by the managers.
As Peter R. Neumann (2010) notes, the terrorists are not ordinary offenders, but are offenders who will spend their time in prison trying to carry out more recruitments as well as mobilizing the external support as he radicalizes other prisoners. He therefore notes that the prison departments have a noble duty of promoting positive influence with a lot of zeal as well as facilitating the transition of prisoners back to the mainstream society with great innovation which is a real challenge especially when dealing with terrorists.
The other pertinent issue in the hands of the correctional managers is the aspect of Mental illness among the inmates. According to Howard Sapers, (Correctional Investigator, Canada), there is need to for a direct and a visible leadership and accountability in handling the mental health maters within the prisons. There is also the need to come up with innovative solutions and practices that will meaningfully address the issue. The service should encourage the recruitment and hiring of clinical mental health professionals. They should also establish permanent recruiting and training budgets for such professionals. This is light of the fact that in the current situation, there is gross mistreatment of the mentally ill people as they are equally punished in the same manner as fully normal people whenever they fall into mistakes within the super-maximum security prisons (Human Rights Watch, 2009). They also note on the same issue that the American prisons, where mentally ill people end up are not meant or formatted fro people of their type but fully normal people. This makes the work of the few personnel who might be in a good position to handle the mental cases extremely difficult.
