Why is Country Living Better than City Living?: A Comparative Analysis of Country and City Living

Industrialization has brought to the contemporary society the joys of closer communication and better living; it has also brought into us societal development through urbanization and migration. For many years, people sought the ideal life of living in an urbanized region or area, where all opportunities such as jobs, commodities, and other human needs abound. However, many years after the sudden influx of people from rural to urban areas had occurred, society is once again witnessing a new societal development. Only this time, the trend is going backwards, wherein the concentration of most people today is to live in the rural or country setting than the urban or city environment. This paper will conduct a comparative analysis of the possible reasons why country living has become preferable over city living. In conducting the analysis, the researcher will develop the stance that: Country Living is better than City Living because Country living results to a holistically healthy individual -- that is, Country dwellers become physically, psychologically, and socially healthy and economically efficient than City inhabitants.

The first factor that is significant for the study of country living is the physical environment that it can offer to an individual. Countries have rural setting that contains the elements of a natural environment. Aside from the aesthetical value of the natural environment, a good and healthy physical environment can result to good physical health of an individual. The fresh air and natural food that people consume contributes to the development of a healthy physical being. Furthermore, a natural environment is characterized to have more and better physical space as compared to urban areas. Because of the spacious environment, country living provides people with better living conditions and physical health.

Psychologically, a natural environment also promotes good mental and emotional stability. Because of the slow-paced and laid-back attitude of country inhabitants, stress is not common among its people. Also, because of the healthy disposition of people living in the rural area, stress is prevented, which results from too much delving into a problem, affecting an individual's mental and emotional processes. The social environment of rural areas also helps prevent stress because there is a sense of commonality and cooperation among the people. This is due to the small community rural environments are made up of, further establishing a close-knit relationship with people in it. Also, because of the high regard and expectations of people around you, camaraderie and a collectivist form of society emerges, thus ensuring one's cooperation for a particular task concerning the community.

Lastly, country living is also beneficial when it comes to economic efficiency. Country living means good crop vegetation and animal rearing, allowing people to obtain fresh food and commodities because of the accessibility of these goods. It also avoids the danger of being exposed to harmful chemicals that tend to be included in manufactured goods often bought in urban and city areas. The natural environment once again figures into the economic efficiency trait of country living; its importance to people is immense in that the main distinguishing factor between country and city living is that country living boasts of a good natural environment that produces a holistically healthy life.

On the other hand, city living can have various advantages over country living, which includes a developed and highly-industrialized society. However, these disadvantages are useless if an individual will not be able to enjoy these developments because of poor living conditions. Indeed, city or urban living is best described as not an ideal place to live in because of the cramped physical landscape and large-scale pollution in the environment. As a result of these unhealthy physical environment conditions, city dwellers often develop physical illness and an unhealthy body.
