This research examines four key business sectors that experienced significant growth during the COVID-19 pandemic: logistics and delivery services, pharmaceuticals, wireless internet services, and digital technologies. The analysis explores how supply and demand transformations created unprecedented opportunities for these industries while traditional businesses struggled with operational disruptions. The paper identifies specific value creation mechanisms and market opportunities that emerged from pandemic-driven consumer behavior changes and infrastructure adaptations.
The demand and supply were transformed entirely by the advent of Covid-19. The outbreak of the virus was not expected by anyone globally, and how it would affect business operations was unanticipated. Some businesses faced problems in dealing with supply chain functions, export orders, storage for raw materials and finished products, and final deliveries. At the same time, some took a new turn for their rising graphic ride due to pandemics (Shafi, Liu & Ren, 2020). This paper aims at providing a list of four businesses that pandemic affected positively and the opportunities the pandemic brought for them, assisting in value creation.
This business has boomed while people were sitting at homes during the lockdown, whether food delivery or product delivery resulting from online buying. Amazon, Alibaba, E-bay, and thousands of other businesses accelerated their sales and promotions during pandemic times. People were sitting at home due to virus outbreaks and strictly prohibited their governments from stepping out of their homes. It includes food delivery services since vegetables, fruits, and other household items were in high demand due to preventing people from grocery shopping in big malls like Wal-Mart and Target, etc.
The logistics and retail companies are now forced to re-think their supply chain operations as inventory management has to be tackled intelligently during these times. This is limited to road logistics and air and water transport. Although flights were affected adversely during the initial days of the pandemic, however, now due to vaccination and the rate of Covid cases decreasing globally, the airline’s route suspensions have eased. The opportunities that have been re-defined by the pandemic in delivering goods to the final consumers are consumer expectations, health priorities, the number of products ordered online compared to days before the pandemic, and infrastructure re-designing (Suguna et al., 2021).
The second business that has progressed at leaps and bounds is the pharmaceutical company. Although the medicines and vaccines for Covid were not available initially, people were using medicines for fever and other protraction precautions as a result of which, US pharmaceutical company AbbVie circulated 183% to its shareholders from the firm’s net profits in the first two quarters of the year 2020 (Oxfam, 2020, p. 16). The other three prominent companies who have been involved in the process of making vaccines also were witnessed earning gigantic profits, naming Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Merck.
The opportunities that were provided to these companies by the pandemic is peoples’ increased concern over healthcare, contact with pharmacists who are the only touchpoints for the consumer for the supply of required medical drugs, and investments in the said field for further research for medicines and vaccines for the virus (Bukhari et al., 2020). Technological interventions for the update in production of the vaccines, treatment development, clinical trials for different immunities of people, and medical reactions of injections with the diagnosis have added value to the business and its outcomes upon the people during pandemic (European Pharmaceutical Review, 2021).
The reliable and high-speed internet services have been in demand to save the economy since businesses had to halt their physical operations amidst pandemics. The Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development held meetings as soon as the pandemic hit to direct the government to allow them funds and support for enhancing the internet’s capacity countrywide for the benefit of industries and society (Saeed et al., 2020). The internet has supported the use of drones and robots for the supply of medicines to remote areas in various countries, along with connectivity for thermal sensors in public areas that can detect the virus in affected individuals.
The internet’s opportunities have been provided via pandemic include video conferencing, business meetings taking place online, educational classes through digital connectivity, virtual healthcare services, and endless possibilities of online buying and shopping globally.
Movie watching applications like Netflix and social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and virtual face-to-face apps like Skype, Face time, Emo, etc., have been on the rise during this time. Families spent more time sitting together and having some entertainment time through Netflix with a wide array of movies and shows that the kinfolks could enjoy together. It was one of the most convenient options for eradicating psychological distress and anxiety due to the virus. The number of subscriptions for Netflix increased during the pandemic, contributing to its increase of 60% earning since January 2020 (p. 24). Other platforms that came widely in use during these times are Facebook, Twitter, Skype, etc. that gave individuals a chance to connect with their loved ones and stay updated about their health status during risky times. Facebook and Twitter are a source of entertainment since different fun posts helped people forget their worries about the pandemic, helping Facebook earn skyrocketed profits at the end of the year 2020.
The opportunities that Covid provides social media and entertainment businesses are that of public awareness, contacting customers, helping people to cope with stress despite being at home, contributing to a decrease in mental hardships, generating responses, and taking opinions through freedom of speech on these platforms, and producing original news instead of fake ones, especially when it is related to a serious concern like Corona.
