The video from ABC discussed this problem with some people who were in a position of needing a job in order to pay down their debt, but unable to get a job because of the debt. This is a difficult position to be in. Regardless of the ethics -- or merit -- of using credit scores as a measure of one's character, it is always good to manage your credit score because you never know when you will find yourself in a position where it is important. That most people have no idea what goes into their credit score is one of the main reasons why companies are foolish to use the credit score as a measure of anything. An act of financial responsibility, like lowering one's credit limits or closing off an old card that is no longer being used, are actually seen by some agencies as negative traits that result in a lower score. So a person could be actively taking action to improve his or her credit situation, and still lower their score in the process.
All the same, I think after these videos that I am going to check my credit score, and make sure that it is an accurate reflection of me. I want to make sure that identity theft has not occurred, and I think it is a good idea to utilize the free annual credit checks to keep track of my score and try to build it to a better point.
