Criminal Profile Detroit

The population of young professionals in Downtown Detroit is increasing by the day and so is the retail of the region. There are many luxury buildings that have been built now. The development schemes towards the side of east river are now covering many luxury condominium progresses. This has resulted in attracting many young citizens to the Downtown of the city along with the renewed New Center and Midtown areas. According to a study that was conducted in the year 2007, it was found out that the residents of new downtown of Detroit were most young professionals. This meant that 57% of these people were aged between 25 to 34, 45% of them were graduates and 34% of them had obtained a master's level degree in their profession. There has been an ever increasing desire to live close to the urban areas and therefore has resulted in many young professionals moving to the mansions of Grosse Pointe that is situated just outside the city. Since Detroit is situated close to Windsor, Ontario, this provides enjoyable nightlife for the people along with the legal age for drinking in Ontario being 19. A study that was conducted in the year 2011 concluded that since the property value, retail and shopping is better in the main city of Detroit, two thirds of the people living in the suburban areas come to the main city to attend cultural events or for their education and recreation.

The changes are quite noticeable since it can be seen that most of the young professionals have obtained their residence in the center of the city. They live here and work here as well. Moreover, these people also come to the center of the city to get their education, to have a view of the nightlife, for recreation and to attend the cultural events that take place in the center of the city.

According to the statistics, the crime rate in the city has not decreased to a very significant level over the years. A huge percentage of the population that lives in the center of the city and also in the suburban areas is that of sex offenders.

However, according to some reports there has been a considerate amount of reduction in the crime rate since the decade of 1970s. In the year 2007, the city was labeled as having the sixth highest violent crime rate among the 25 large cities of the country. In the subsequent year, this rate fell to about 11% of what it was in 2007. There was a property crime rate of 82.18% per 1000 residents and 16.73% per 1000 residents for other violent crimes (United States Department of Labor, 2012).

It has been reported that the downtown of the city has a much lower crime rate than the average of the state as well as the national average. According to the analysis that was made in the year 2007, it was reported that the officials of Detroit had concluded that about 70% of the murders that take place in the city were related to drug abuse, meanwhile there were almost 70% of the murder cases that were still not resolved (Detroit Crime Rates and Statistics, 2010).

As for the latest statistics, for the year 2012, the crime rate in the city was one of the reasons why cost of car insurance increased more than ever.
