One advantage of having a compact license is mobility. Another benefit is cost efficiency. Nurses save on the costs associated with obtaining and maintaining multiple state licenses, including fees for applications, renewals, and continuing education requirements. Improved access to care is another major pro. It opens up the door for underserved or rural areas, which tend to have a shortage of healthcare providers (Adashi et al., 2021). Furthermore, professional development is improved as exposure to diverse healthcare environments and practices broadens a nurse\\\\\\\'s skills.

However, there are also cons associated with having a compact license. One issue is varying standards, which can cause confusion and discrepancies in the quality of care provided across different states. Plus, with respect to discipline, action taken against a nurse in one state can impact their ability to practice in all compact states, which might be confusing and complicated. Privacy concerns could also arise with the exchange of information among states about nurse licensure and discipline, what with the risk that increased data sharing among states could lead to potential breaches or misuse of sensitive information. Also, jurisdictional challenges are a significant con. In cases of legal disputes or malpractice claims, determining the jurisdiction and applicable laws can be complex and cumbersome. The varying legal frameworks across states can complicate the resolution of such cases, which ends up making it difficult for nurses and their employers to cope with the legalistic environment.

In 2024, the Nurse Licensure Compact includes more than 30 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) helps with safe and effective nursing practice. One of their main functions is overseeing the licensure and certification of nurses, ensuring they meet the necessary educational and professional standards. This includes the administration of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), which evaluates the competence of entry-level nurses and serves as a benchmark for nursing qualifications.

In addition to licensure, the board is responsible for regulation and enforcement. They enforce nursing practice standards through a robust framework of regulations and disciplinary actions. Through investigating complaints and taking appropriate actions against those who violate nursing standards, the board promotes public safety and helps with maintaining the integrity of the nursing profession.
