Cinder -- the Lunar Chronicles When and where does the story take place? The story takes place in 125 in New Beijing. It is the future after a disastrous World War IV. List two main characters and tell something about each one Linh Cinder: The protagonist is 16-year-old Linh Cinder, a cyborg mechanic, who is loosely associated with the fairy tale Cinderella although there are major differences between the traditional Cinderella and Linh Cinder.

Linh Cinder is the only real heir to the lunar throne because her mother was Queen Channary (now deceased) and she is the niece of Queen Levana. Linh Cinder was born with the name Selene Channary Jannali Blackburn but sadly did not know who her father was and her memory was weak because of an accident she was involved in. In that accident both of Linh Cinder's parents perished and she lost a hand and one leg. Her legal guardian after her parents' passing was Adri, who abused her.

Linh Cinder is stubborn, doesn't dress well, is often dirty; she is thin, wears a ponytail; her left hand and left leg are metal and she has 4 metal ribs. Notably, she is a very skilled mechanic. Prince Kaito (Kai): He is the 18-year-old Crown Prince of Eastern Commonwealth. Similar to the Cinderella fairy tale, Kai is supposed to marry someone he doesn't want to marry, but in time (after meeting her several times) he develops romantic feelings for Linh Cinder.

Unlike Linh Cinder, the prince is of Asian extraction, and earthling. His hair is black, shaggy and straight, and although he likes more casual clothes (he meets Linh Cinder wearing a hoodie), he is the prince and is expected to wear formal clothes like suites and dress shirts. On page 6 of Meyer's book the prince is described with "…startled copper brown eyes and black hair that hung past his ears and lips that every girl in the country had admired a thousand times" (Meyer, 6).

Cinder doesn't want the prince to find out she's a cyborg, which creates drama and conflict in the novel. What is the main conflict of the book? There are several concurrent conflicts in the novel -- which keeps readers glued to the story. One of the main conflicts in the book is the terrible plague that is killing many people. Somehow Cinder is blamed for her sister contracting the plague. Meanwhile millions of people have been killed around the earth.

Another component to the conflict is that the Cyborgs are discriminated against; they are exploited by the government as guinea pigs (unwilling test subjects), as the government wants to find a cure -- at the expense of the Cyborgs. And a third source of ongoing conflict is Queen Levana and her hatred for Cinder and her desire to marry Kai -- and kill him. That is an ongoing sense of conflict. What is the climax of the story? Naturally Cinder is deeply involved in the climax of the story.

She comes close to committing suicide. After creating a huge scene and shooting Levana's guard, she has been thrown into prison and notwithstanding the doctor's insistence that she find a way out and in the process save the Earthen Union. She could save the Earthen Union because she is the legitimate empress, not Levana. This is climatic because Cinder is terribly confused about her identity, her true identity. What is the ending of the story? The writer Marissa Meyer leaves the reading hanging.

Cinder has a chance to rearrange her identity now that she cannot be tracked. She must be.
