The crossed bones were reference to the original Templar logo of a red cross with blunted ends -- and also to human mortality. But it also was a life-giving symbol, as Christ was crucified at Golgotha, the "Place of the Skull." Thus, the Templars did not fear death upon the earth, as they were one with Christ, where he died (Jerusalem) and the cross where he died. This fearless symbol often struck terror into the hearts of the Templar's foes in the Holy Land, as did the message of 'surrender or die' to the ships the pirate Templars were determined to attack.
Ironically, although their most famous public symbol is an image of mortality, according to Childress, the Templars live on, in the founding of the country of America as well as the piracy that existed on the high seas until the 17th and 18th century. Columbus may have come to America using Templar maps, the Templars gave birth to Freemasonry, and rather than merely persons seeking to make money by stealing, many pirates were in fact determined to right a historical wrong based upon the founders of their order. This may suggest an uncomfortably dark vision of religion and even democracy to many readers, but even for those who doubt some of Brown's more wild and sweeping connections, it is a good introduction in its more factually substantiated parts to the history of the Church and the navigation of the high seas.
