Academic Interests and the Plan to Pursue Them
As I considered the options available to me for a university education, I was determined to match my dreams and desires with the right university. My life goals are not completely finalized in my mind. I have a direction in which I would like to proceed but it is possible that I may make adjustments as the program progresses. I therefore need a university that provided strong academic advising and guidance. The academic advising program at the University of Southern California is exceptional. While the university gives me the opportunity to begin my journey, the Office of College advising provided the direction for course correction if necessary.
My major is undeclared, not because I do not have a possible direction, but because that direction is not fixed at this point. I have a desire to become engaged in some statistical discipline. However, I am also interested in engineering and computer technology. The opportunities presented in the business and liberal arts program are also intriguing. Consequently it is difficult to immediately fix my major, since my choices are fluid and dynamic.
Prior to entering the university I am engaged in exploring my personal skill and strengths. This exercise involves the development of a personal inventory as a tool to guide in the selection of the best options at university. I am interested in making use of the "Choosing your major" exercises that are available on the website, in particular the personal interest exercises. Engaging in these exercises will allow me to continue the self-awareness process. I have also observed that the liberal arts program has many options that easily hold my personal interest.
Another approach that I believe will be very useful in finally determining my major is the exploration of multiple courses. I have observed with interest that it is recommended that a major should balance the personal and professional interests of the student. In attempting to find this equilibrium point, I will initially delve into many courses even across schools and through this process will be able to identify the courses that stoke my academic fires. This is a very positive feature of the university that sets it apart from other facilities.
I see the path to choosing my major as an experience that will build my self-esteem and allows me to understand a lot more about myself. Of all the personal development options available at the university I consider self understanding and awareness the most important. It allows the individual to find their best fit for career based not only on the degree but also on the skill set the person possesses. I have a creative mind and a strong desire to achieve something that is beyond the ordinary.
I can envision those skills being employed as an auto engineer where I will be engaged in cutting edge developments of vehicles. The type of cars I envision making will be fuel efficient and fast. It is my purpose to have these cars become very popular among wealthy persons. As the popularity of the vehicles increase, I would market them using images of famous singers, football players and dancers. The positioning of these famous persons and the car ensures that the car has an image of exclusivity. It is also part of my vision to pass my skills on to other persons whom I could mentor and have them create similar products.
