Many wars and threats of wars are started over treaty disagreements. NATO members agree to abide by the decisions of NATO which helps to prevent wars out of military anger (Ames, 2003).
Because NATO has been found to be successful there are many who believe it should open its membership to the entire region that it serves instead of excluding certain nations. The nations that are excluded have no reason to practice fair policies because there is no one to tell them they are wrong. In addition there are many nations who want to be a part of NATO but do not meet its criteria for membership, which call for many things including economic decisions, humane treatment of their residents and certain abilities.
