¶ … NATO and its functions. The writer argues that NATO should open to the entire world and allow any nation to participate that wants to. There were three sources used to complete this paper. With the world heating up over the American-Iraq conflict many nations are calling for the involvement of NATO.

NATO which is the North American Alliance Treaty Organization, provides treaty mediation and rule setting for its members (Ames, 2003) The privileges and the duties of the member nations are weighted by population, economic clout and other factors and the members of the organization can come to NATO for mediation anytime they are unhappy with another nation's treatment or actions that threaten or do involve military action. NATO has been reported to be highly successful in it venture and its purpose (Ames, 2003).

It provides support as well as an outlet for grievances which may well help prevent future wars. Many wars and threats of wars are started over treaty disagreements. NATO members agree to abide by the decisions of NATO which helps to prevent wars out of military anger (Ames, 2003). Because NATO has been found to be successful there are many who believe it should open its membership to the entire region that it serves instead of excluding certain nations.

The nations that are excluded have no reason to practice fair policies because there is no one to tell them they are wrong. In addition there are many nations who want to be a part of NATO but do not meet its criteria for membership, which call for many things including economic decisions, humane treatment of their residents and certain abilities.

If NATO would open its membership to the entire region it might prove to be the tool that forces less aggressive actions and attitudes from some of the Middle East nations that have been bickering for years. The entrance of those nations to the organization might cause them to work toward fulfilling NATO's rules, and that in turn would go a long way in stopping the posturing being done out of anger at the economic inequality they perceive they see across the world.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance consisting of the United States, Canada, and 14 other Western. The 14 countries are Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom (NATO: History of NATO: Information about NATO (http://cgi.tripod.com/adm/popunder/insite.html?)." The exclusion of other nations sets a them and us standard that is being seen first hand with the current Iraq situation.

If NATO opened its doors across the board Iraq, and others could join and have an outlet for their grievances. This might prevent wars and it might help in the total globalization efforts currently underway. NATO is a fifty-year-old soother of hurt feelings.
