The benefits of developing a network: Meeting goals

Networking is a critical component of preparing a new professional for the job market and for current professionals to ensure that their skills remain 'sharp' so they remain competitive candidates for better positions. "Networking is about developing long-term relationships for mutual gain and creating a lasting impression with people so that they think of you positively when an opportunity arises" (Benefits of networking, 2012, londonhr connection). The principle that 'it's not what you know, it's who you know' may be a commonly-cited cliche, but there is an element of truth to the old adage. There are many qualified candidates out in the job market today. There are also more opportunities for a wider pool of candidates to find out about jobs online through job boards like Monster.com and also company websites. Candidates today are not simply competing with people nearby, but all over the world, particularly with the rise of telecommuting.

Knowing people on an intimate level in one's field conveys a vital advantage to job-seekers. Having friends in one's line of work can alert a candidate about job openings before they are posted. They can even become a way to 'create' a job at a smaller organization. If a web designer talks to a small business owner, she can convince him of the need to have someone on-staff to maintain their website. Opportunities for networking are everywhere, not simply in the workplace but also at the gym, at the dog park, and at school events. "Depending upon your overall objectives, you should do your homework to ensure that you're in the right room with the right people" wherever you may be (Tips on networking, 2012, londonhr connection). Above all, "a good networker should be outgoing, sincere, friendly, supportive, a good listener or someone who follows up and stays in touch" (Networking definition, 2012, Small Business Encyclopedia)

Freelancers are particularly in need of an updated contact list, given that they are always looking for work and selling themselves. Even employees with 'permanent' positions today know that nothing is really permanent in today's job market and they may become a freelancer tomorrow -- or want to open up their own business. Even if an employee already has a job, contacts can be an important source of information about the industry and better opportunities. Also, no job is truly secure in the modern economy. No one can be secure that he or she has a 'job for life.' Networking can also be a way to create a stronger resume as well as to get a new job.

Becoming a member of a professional organization allows an employee to attend vocationally-related networking conferences, and learn about important new technology, ways of approaching problems and simply how to teach new life skills like negotiation. Continuing education courses are also offered through professional associations. These courses can be taken online or 'in real life' in many instances. Trade journals, newsletters, and website content of professional associations are also valuable sources of recent data and allow members to find out about current developments in the field, add to their skill set, and bolster their resume. Professional organizations often have message boards online that allow for more direct networking opportunities, where members can communicate with members all over the world.
