¶ … Ethical Organization
In a growingly dynamic business community, economic agents seek new ways to become competitive and create points of difference. One specific effort in this sense is represented by the integration of ethical conduct within the organizational setting. The creation of an ethical organization is a highly complex effort and various literary sources have approached the issue.
From a theoretical standpoint, it was first important to reassess what had been covered in the course, including the definitions and roles of culture and ethics or the role and construction of an ethical leader, with the challenges and opportunities created by these features.
Based on the readings in the courses, numerous life lessons are learned. Some of the more notable of them include the following:
Ethics and morals are not sporadic features, but should represent constant patterns of behavior
An ethical conduct is the only means of attaining one's objectives, be these objectives personal or professional
A leader has to possess ethical conduct and lead by power of example. In the different scenario, they will not be good leaders, able to motivate and guide their subalterns
Ethics and a positive organizational culture are essential to adequate operations, but also to improving the relationship between the institution and the various categories of stakeholders, such as employees, people served, partners or the general public.
The lessons just mentioned are highly valuable to the personal and professional success of any individual and this value is observable due to various reasons. For instance, an ethical behavior on the part of one individual makes the people around him trust the individual. In other words, ethics generates trust within the social and professional circles. Then, within the strict business setting, ethical conduct promotes a more positive working environment, in which the people are supported to complete their work within the most adequate circumstances.
Within the specific business climate, a major reason attesting to the value of the lessons learnt is represented by the role of the organizational culture. The organizational culture can be defined as the "values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of an organization. Organizational culture is the sum total of an organization's past and current assumptions, experiences, philosophy, and values that hold it together, and is expressed in its self-image, inner workings, interactions with the outside world, and future expectations" (Business Dictionary).
The organizational culture is as such the nucleus of any company and it impacts the means in which the employees work and function and also the means in which the organizational objectives are met. An organizational culture focused on ethical behavior will function in an ethical manner and will as such create a positive reputation and positive results, whereas a company with an unethical culture is prone to collapse from the inside.
