DiSC Analysis

What does your DiSC report tell you about your strengths and capacities in relation to coaching, specifically?

I am high on scales I and IV which means I would likely want to be a consultative participant in coaching, maintaining timeliness most of all, but also applying systematic thinking as needed. I will approach most situations with a rather high intensity and prefer a quick pace, variety, new challenges, and opportunities. I am task-oriented and creative and will approach projects with enthusiasm and determination. I am decisive and not likely to seek out others to confirm my decisions once they have been made. I have the propensity to be very accurate and precise. I prefer to wait until cool heads prevail in stressful situations and require a full explanation before changes are made

What aspects of the report seem to describe you well?

The assessment suggests that I am effective at establishing processes and procedures for getting work done, which I believe is true. Generally, I believe that responsibilities of team members or subordinates should be assigned in a systematic manner. I'm not one to play favorites, but I'm also not afraid to tell people when they aren't doing a good job. I challenge others to do their very best and I organize my work in a structured fashion. I am capable of producing timely results; however, I tend to be more results-oriented than quality-oriented. My preference is for a systematic and structured approach to things and I like to see things done correctly. I am decisive and quick to take action, but I may need to attend to quality more often in my pursuit of timely results. My motivation is having a high sense of urgency, pressures, and critical deadlines. I look opportunities to be in control of people and situations.

What aspects of the report do not seem to describe you well?

The report suggests that I may sometimes have difficulty securing cooperation from team members when my goals don't match theirs, which I do not feel is generally true. It also suggests that I express information clearly but some people may see me as overbearing. I have never heard or been told that people see me this way. The report suggests that although I am task-focused, I may be seen as aloof and out of touch with my group. Again, I have a hard time believing this because I never hear anything like that about myself from people. The suggestion that I like freedom from controls, close supervision, and organizational constraints is not that true, I work in a very structured environment with close supervision and it isn't a problem for me.

How does this information relate to other self-assessments that you might have taken in the past?

Through the process of obtaining my education I have taken several self-assessments including DiSC assessments. I have found that as I learn and progress towards meeting my educational goals I have become more self-assured and perhaps a little more opinionated. I think the current assessment shows the affect of my education on my personality. I have always been high on the dominance scale but see an increase in the compliance scale on this last DiSC.

2. Prepare a "Plan of Action and Commitment Timetable" as illustrated in the Brocato (2003) article, Figure 4, p. 21.

Plan of Action Commitment Timetable:

Skills/Behaviors: Improving teamwork skills.

Personal Mission Statement: I want to develop my teamwork skills so that I can be an effective team leader who communicates and motivates the team.

Short-Term Goals: To realize that others may need time to adjust to my quick decision-making style and to spend more time explaining my reasoning process, rather than just announcing my conclusion. I will be willing to delay my individual work to assist others with high priority group projects.

Midterm Goals: When making managing the team I will look for points of agreement and common interest, especially if disagreement and conflict are an issue. Avoid a win/lose approach to people and relationships. Avoid sharp criticism. When someone offers input, acknowledge the effort even if he does not agree with the idea. When responding, focus on specific issues.
