Opening of a presentation: techniques and best practices

Last reviewed: September 22, 2006 ~2 min read

Distance Learning business presentation on any topic is of vital importance to promote any business. In this, it is therefore also extremely important to provide the event in the utmost of the presenter's ability. While doing this, it is as important to provide a presentable physical image of the company as it is in providing the presentation itself.

I was once at the receiving end of a fairly ineffectual opening to a presentation. The problem was not the subject matter. It was a topic very close to my heart, in terms of tertiary education for the disabled. The presentation itself was not bad, but not brilliant either. There was nothing unusual about the power point presentation regarding the various disabilities represented, or the strategies to cater for them.

What did make the presentation less scintillating than it could have been is the presenter herself. Firstly, the general impression was that she was extremely nervous. She periodically repeated the word "okay," for example, and she was fidgeting with the microphone while she was talking. These actions made it difficult to concentrate on her opening words. Furthermore, she appeared too nervous to make eye contact with any of the delegates present.
