¶ … Divorce

The family is considered to be every individual's basic social agent. Its primary function is to mold the character and values of every individual, of every citizen. When asked what a family comprises of, most (if not all) will definitely respond with this answer: a father, a mother, and children. But in practice, it may be a whole lot different story. It can be the case of a father and child/children only. It can be the case of a mother and child/children only. This is where the phenomenon of divorce comes in.

The weight of being confronted with the fact that one's basic social institution, i.e. The family, has fallen apart generates huge interest. But what, indeed, happens beyond divorce? How do people confront this issue? What various ways or solutions have been suggested when dealing with divorce?

Confront the Issue

Divorce is often sad because it represents the death of a marriage. Normally, a person goes through a number of stages such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Here, I wish to put emphasis on the acceptance of divorce as it is deemed to be the basic prerequisite in divorce solutions. Acceptance stage greatly involves the "okay this is how it is" stage (Tesler & Thompson, n.d.). As such, one is being confronted of the areas of conflict between his or her marriage and his or her partner.

But beyond communicating the problem between husband and wife, much emphasis should be given to parents' communication to their children. According to SFLK (2006, par. 2), "communicating regularly will let your kids know that you care about their feelings as well, and that you're willing to do what it takes to heal, so that you can improve the situation for everyone involved."

On Financial Assistance

Given that the wife and husband have separated, it is important to place children's welfare at the topmost of concerns. Also, given the new family set-up that will be brought about by the divorce, it is then considered important to provide financial assistance to the children and/or spouse (if needed). An impending divorce can be submitted to mediation before starting a court action. In this process, a neutral party shall be known as the Mediator will assist the couple in working out and settling their divorce issues. Through this process, the husband and wife will be given an opportunity to amicably settle their financial and marital differences and come up with divorce solutions such as financial assistance (Raab, 2001).
