Professional Practice Developments Experience Practice Immersion
The AACN DNP Essentials and the AONL role-specific competencies examined in this course give the professional nurse a solid way to approach the delivery of quality care. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive self-assessment of my professional practice developments during the practice immersion experience. This paper brings together the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Essentials and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) role-specific competencies in order to show how this course has prepared me for success in my professional nursing practice. It gives particular attention to the areas of evidence-based care, improving patient outcomes, benefitting from interprofessional collaboration, perfecting project management, adhering to ethical principles, and the importance and value of sharing scholarship and research.
Reflection
In this section I reflect on seven key course outcomes and how the course has prepared me to achieve them.
1. Create Professional Interaction and Partnerships to Facilitate Evidence-Based Care and Quality Patient Outcomes
The course has helped me to improve my professional interactions, collaborations and partnerships with my professional peers in providing evidence-based care. I have had many several discussions, and I have read numerous case studies, and been part of collaborative projects—and through it all I have come to hold a deeper value and appreciation for interdisciplinary teamwork for the sake of quality care and improving patient outcomes. Patient care really needs to be holistic care, involving all professionals within the field—from physical health to mental, social, and even financial and spiritual, as these are arenas that impact the whole person, too (Rosmarin et al., 2021). For example, during a group project on reducing hospital-acquired infections, I worked with specialists (infection control nurses, pharmacists, and so on), and I had a very positive interaction and fruitful collaboration. We were able to bring diverse expertise and implement evidence-based practice. Role-playing scenarios helped me develop better communication skills, too, which has been helpful in maintain a culture of mutual respect between myself and my peers.
2. Design Evidence-Based Interventions that Address Healthcare Disparities or Improve Patients’ Health Outcomes
The course has helped me develop skills for implementing evidence-based interventions that address healthcare disparities. One piece of work that stands out involved developing a community health intervention to address hypertension in underserved populations. I reviewed current literature and came up with a plan that promoted lifestyle modifications and patient empowerment through education, in accordance with the needs of the community. It was a great way to see the power of research applied in a real-world situation, with a plan devised to address real-world needs of those in underserved populations.
The course also taught me to incorporate culturally sensitive approaches. I realized that partnering with local community leaders can be a good step in gaining trust and improving participation rates of members of the population. Building trust is like building a bridge, and it is difficult to cross the divide between poor health and good health without it (Kissane & Kissane, 2024). I also saw the benefits of data analysis for evaluating an intervention\\\'s impact, to see if it is successful or not.

3. Incorporate Knowledge of Healthcare Financing within and Across Healthcare Systems
Financing is such a big part of healthcare due to expenses and costs that nurses have to know about it and how it affects patients. The course certainly provided a deep dive healthcare economics and its impact on patient care. Plus, in a project that looked into the cost-effectiveness of a new diabetes management program, I applied financial principles to justify the program\\\'s implementation, and saw for myself how fiscal responsibility can coexist with quality patient care. It gave me first-hand experience with budget analysis and cost-benefit assessments.
The course also showed the importance of understanding different payment models (Berkowitz, 2021). I learned that in healthcare there is a need to balance clinical priorities with financial considerations so that patient care is economically viable. Professional nurses have to be able to advocate for practices that will help patients without putting the organization out of operations, but there also need to be ways for patients to pay without fear of being burdened by financial hardship (Berkowitz, 2021).
4. Develop Interprofessional Collaborations to Promote Change in Healthcare Systems
Interprofessional collaboration is another big part of improving healthcare delivery. This course showed the need for nurses to engage with other healthcare professionals for the purpose of contributing to positive changes within healthcare systems. For example, during the practicum, I participated in an interprofessional committee focused on improving patient discharge processes, and in that process I worked with physicians, social workers, and pharmacists, and we all together took part in the development of a new protocol with the goal being to lower readmission rates. It was a good experience in terms of teamwork. At the same time, I learned the value of conflict resolution and negotiation, and why it helps to have consensus (Delak & Sirok, 2022). Everyone has a perspective worth considering, so it is important that collaborators have the ability to reason their way through difficulties to achieve positive change.
5. Demonstrate Effective Project Management Strategies for Project Planning
Project management is needed if changes are going to be made in healthcare. The course provided some good training in project management strategies, including leadership, change management models, getting buy-in, planning strategies, execution, and evaluation. I am definitely more prepared now to oversee quality improvement initiatives, and I would like to do one to reduce medication errors. Tools like Gantt charts and risk assessments are practical ways to keep a project on track with meeting objectives. Practice in these areas has certainly given me more awareness of what to expect.
I also learned the value of clear communication and role definition within the project team, which facilitated accountability and efficient task completion (Ali et al., 2021). Taking note of stakeholder engagement and having feedback loops help make sure project decisions aer based on real-time input. Project management software exists to help with tracking milestones and managing risk. There is a lot to be aware of in terms of managing projects well, and this course helped make me more aware of that.

6. Apply Theory and Evidence from Management, Policy, and Perspective to Support Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in Healthcare Systems
Management theories can be brought into the sphere of policy perspectives to assist with quality improvement initiatives (Scarbrough & Kyratsis, 2022). The course emphasized applying these concepts to real-world scenarios, particularly with assessing the impact of a new health policy on patient safety. It helps to see problems and initiatives through management theories because one can more readily see potential areas for improvement and make evidence-based recommendations. Plus, quality improvement frameworks like Lean and Six Sigma can help by keeping everyone informed and up to speed.
7. Exhibit Adherence to Ethical Principles in Healthcare Delivery, Program Planning, and Financial Management
Of all the essentials, however, none is more important than working based on ethical principles. This course brought to mind the importance of ethics in all aspects of healthcare delivery, program planning, professional practice, financial management, and advocacy (Scott & Scott, 2021). Case studies were helpful in understanding and contextualizing ethical dilemmas, and it was helpful to see how something like resource allocation during a pandemic could be better understood by applying ethical principles of beneficence and autonomy to help in making the right nursing decisions.
The course also helped with understanding ethical guidelines and standards from organizations such as the American Nurses Association and the World Health Organization, both of which are good helps in decision-making processes. I learned about the need for transparency and accountability in program planning and financial management and how important it is for patients to understand their billing. Discussion about real-world ethical challenges with peers and mentors helped me realize the real need for being grounded ethically speaking.
DNP Practicum Team Mentor
Collaboration with my DNP practicum team mentor has been most helpful with both my academic pursuits and my professional development. My mentor had a lot of experience and insight to share with me and gave me much in terms of invaluable guidance and support throughout my practicum. The mentorship has helped me in many different areas, such as understanding project implementation better, and I received a lot of practical advice and feedback so that I could focus on specific skills development. For example, during the development of a patient education program, my mentor gave good input on evidence-based strategies, theory, and effective research techniques. For me, it was a collaboration that definitely prepared me for future leadership.
