Oxbridge Is a Consulting Agency

Last reviewed: February 28, 2008 ~4 min read

¶ … Oxbridge is a consulting agency founded in Taiwan which is currently expanding their operations to China, where they find it difficult to adjust and get passed the cultural barriers. They encounter problems moreover when the management of students is becoming more simplified and the need for institutions such as Oxbridge is decreasing. The question being posed here is whether Oxbridge will be able to overcome these shortages.

Looking at it from the particular angle of the article "That's Interesting" by Murray S. Davis, the question could easily be characterized as interesting. In the author's perspective, "interesting theories deny certain assumptions of their audience, while non-interesting theories affirm certain assumptions of their audience" (Murray, 1971). To better explain and apply this statement to the particular case of Oxbridge, the resolving of their problems is interesting as it poses numerous limitations and denies certain courses of action. For instance, the company will be unable to overlook the existence of the problem and go on with the business like everything is fine. Also, the consultancy company cannot continue to base their profits on aiding students apply to international schools, since the standardized forms will ease the process and students will no longer require assistance from Oxbridge.

Furthermore interesting about the question and the problems encountered by Oxbridge is the fact that there exists no rapid or perfect solution. As such, the officials will have to struggle in order to identify the most suitable strategy for resolving the crisis. In addition, it is not the final solution which will be interesting, but the path to finding it. And interesting would be to find new and innovative methods for resolving the crisis.

The topic is once again interesting as it poses a major challenge. It stimulates as such the brain to function and work in finding a solution. In other words, it raises the interest of the general audience as well as the interest of the general public, making as such the question and the path to the solution an interesting one.

What makes the question and the topic even more interesting is the high connection and interconnectivity between the major parts of the problem, referred to as "the relations among multiple phenomena" by Davis. As such, a large number of variables occur; and they must all be kept in mind while finding the most suitable solution. These variables could include past problems solved by the company, the lessons learnt and the mistakes made; future opportunities; market trends and characteristics; financial possibilities of Oxbridge and particular needs and demands from the audience. And correlating all these features makes the question and the problem even more interesting.

The problems they encounter in China represent another reason which makes the issue interesting from the stand point of the article written by Murray Davis. In this order of ideas, a problem is foremost interesting when "complicating social factors" intervene. And the social factors are given in this particular case by the cultural barriers which Oxbridge can't get passed. All these materialize in the company's inability to properly communicate with their Chinese personnel.
