¶ … era of the Dot-Com is upon us and studies now exist that relate the importance of being ready for the internet boom. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the article "Five Steps to a Dot Com Strategy," by N. Venkatraman.

Venkatraman does a good job of framing the "problem." The situation was not directly framed as being a problem. The article did however discuss ways in which businesses are falling short in the "dot-com era," and ways to increase their productivity as well as ways to increase their knowledge base regarding "dot-com" and its benefits. At, first the purpose of the writing is not clearly stated. Well not at first, in the beginning it is easy to think that this study is just another one about the rise of the dot-com era. However once one has delved into the study it is easier to determine that the main premise deals with where companies are falling short and what they need to do and look for in order to create and maintain a successful eCommerce business.

The research does not make many references to a need for urgency. The only mention of time is that the significance of the internet was at one point overlooked however now it is evident that the internet is a technological breakthrough that is not going anywhere. It has become pertinent that business become competitive on this platform or else they will be doomed to be out shined by competitors that utilize what the internet has to offer. The linkage between the problem and data is a little obscure. Examples are however given in the data, which allows the reader to connect with the information, and there are companies and some information mentioned in the study however, there are links made available regarding sites that offer further information or support to the information being discussed.

The study does express that the values of a company and the way in which that company expresses their values to the consumer can affect the overall well-being of the company and its brand. The problem and previous research are linked through the ideas of teamwork and the significance of management and their training. Numbers of researchers have conducted research on the effectiveness of properly trained managers as well as the importance of style and technique. Throughout the study, these aspects and others are discussed. Not only are managers mentioned but more specifically IT managers.

If the management team is not in sync, it is easy for the dot-com agenda to be hijacked by one or two members reflecting a partisan... Every company needs a champion to get started, but it needs more than one to succeed (Venkatraman, 2000, p.27).

Previous research is not utilized throughout the research. However, there is some supportive precise research and documentation utilized in this article. The study discusses ineffective management and team techniques; however, there are not any direct references to extensive past research. Various options are provided in the study regarding effective ways to prepare for the dot-com boom. The research discusses what would make efforts more effective while preparing for effective entrance into the internet. The options appear to be balanced and fair. This research is presented in a way that presents itself as non-biased. The research provides enough information for both the negatives and positives of the data presented.

The research does provide information on the correct avenues however very little takes place that compares the various choices given. The research indicates that combinations of techniques need to be utilized for the best results. However, there are not any distinctions as to which combinations are the most effective. The choices are supported by providing information that proves these methods were useful in other situations. The research does most of all provide information regarding proper management styles and communication in a company that is attempting to delve into the world of dot-com.

The research does offer information that could help to sway one's opinions toward specific techniques; on the other hand, there are no direct indicators that state a method is more effective than another. Politics plays a small role in this particular research. In addition, the changes should be affordable for most business. Considering most of the changes incorporate changing way of thinks and some internal business processes.
