eBay SWOT Analysis
Based on the case study analysis the following strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) have been defined for eBay. The transformation of eBay from an auction site to a provider of marketplace, payment processing and communication services is the basis of the case study used in this analysis.
Strengths
The core business model of eBay is one of its most resilient strengths, responsible for the rapid maturing of the company from being purely focused on auctions to now include three lines of business. These are the electronic marketplaces, communication services and payment services. As eBay has concentrated on their core business, that of providing marketplace services for buyers and sellers from anywhere who want to sell any product to anyone else. The scalability of their business model has forced the company to develop another critical strength, and that is technological innovation. One of the more well-known of their internally-developed innovations is the Buy-Now auction logic sequence on their main marketplace (Klein, 2008). In keeping with the technological innovation the company has shown the ability to sustain over time, in 2008 eBay announced they will begin selling data mart services as well (Winter, 2008). Another strength of the company is its ability to balance a transaction-based business model for its marketplace, while growing their communication services and payment services lines of business. Paralleling their strength in creating internal innovations is the ability to continually increase security and authentication technologies as well. All of these factors contribute to the eBay brand being one of the most recognized online and one of the most trusted as well.
Weaknesses eBay continues to face the challenges of operating a globally-based e-commerce site that is based on a marketplace business model specifically in the area of litigations involving fraud and deception on the part of buyers and sellers, and declining profit margins. The ramp up of communications services and payment services is crucial for eBay to stay profitable over time. Additional weaknesses include the tendency to overlook support and service for their primary marketplace, leading to buyer and seller frustrations as well (Klein, 2008)
Opportunities
Despite the weaknesses the company is facing, there are many potential acquisitions they can make to bolster their three core businesses, including acquiring more payment processing companies to expand the breadth of their offerings in that area. There are also opportunities to capitalizing on reselling their marketplace solutions in a customized form to companies interested in creating their own. Additional opportunities include global growth through joint ventures and acquisitions to minimize new market entry risk.
