Economic Systems
Over the years, there has been continuing debate surrounding the best economic system for dealing with a host of issues. In emergency situations, this will play a vital role in ensuring that there is adequate support and resources for meeting the needs of stakeholders. To fully understand which one works the best requires looking at how the socialist ideology is best suited for dealing with these kinds of situations, the way it responds to the Haiti earthquake and the how laws of supply / demand will impact commodities prices. Together, these different elements will show the effects of different economic theories in dealing with a variety of challenges. (Klein, 2010)
Which economic system is best suited for handling a crisis of epic proportions (hurricane, flood, blizzard, forest fire, etc.)? Why?
The best economic system for addressing hurricanes, blizzards, floods and forest fires is socialism. This is because it focuses on addressing the needs of ordinary people equally. During times of distress, these are the majority, who are suffering and have their lives disrupted. At the same time, they can provide added assistance to stakeholders in order to alleviate the total amounts of damages and lasting social costs. (Klein, 2010)
Describe and explain why a socialist system might be the best in responding to the needs of people struck by an emergency situation like the earthquake that occurred in Haiti in January 2010.
Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. After the earthquake, the situation in country became exponentially worse. This is because millions of homes were destroyed and there was a lack of resources and support. If a socialist philosophy was utilized, it will provide more than enough assistance to help people rebuild their communities and have temporary places to live. At the same time, it will target those individuals who are corrupt and contributed to the current situation in the country. This will serve as a way of addressing many of the social problems which made the situation worse. (Klein, 2010)
Use the laws of supply and demand to explain why the cost to heat our homes and businesses goes up in the winter time. Be sure to explain your answer fully.
The reason why it costs more to heat homes in the winter is the demand for heating oil and natural gas goes up dramatically. This will cause supplies to become tight. When this happens, producers and distributors will increase their costs to reflect the rising demand from consumers and businesses. (Klein, 2010)
