Studying in United States have always felt the need to challenge myself and learn from the situations that I have overcome in my life. These challenges and obstacles have provided me the opportunity to be more independent and responsible. I always hade passion for English and knew that learning it would always be a challenge for me. Therefore, just two-year ago, I decided to take up this challenge and went to study abroad in the United States to begin a new stage of my life.
I knew that studying in U.S. would give me a strong foundation and command over English language. Along with my brother studying in the United States, I had come to face the fact that I had left a comfortable life behind. With a sheltered and dedicated care from my parents in Hong Kong, now, living in the United States, without my parents, I realized that I have to be strong and take care of our daily life. Thus, became responsible for all the daily tasks I once took for granted at home.
In order to look after my younger brother in the absence of my parents, I had to take the role of being the responsible adult of the family. Daily I had to rush back home to cook dinner for him that the delicious food could greet him upon his arrival. Furthermore, I served as a connection to outside work, including, shopping for everyday requirements, looking for an apartment, managing housework, and even learning how to drive. Although, my immigration experience had never been a joy ride but I had always kept up my courage in order to overcome such difficult obstacles.
Moreover, after days of laborious work, I have excelled to a high level English as well as adjusted to this new environment. However, today I wish I understood American culture even better than I do now. Though I sometime have embarrassing moments when I use the wrong slang term in front of my friends.
Attending college in the U.S. will make more aware of their customs and the people there. Being the kind of making friends and helping others, I always enjoy the friendship and the warmth along side it and so even in this new country, I tried to take on this role, irrespective of what response I get in return.
As I learned more English, I became a better friend knowing how to encourage my friends when they were upset, to praise them when they achieved their goals; to talk and listen to them whenever they needed me to be there. I believed that showing warmth and kindness to others will bring me the same respect and warmth in return. Thus, overcoming cultural barriers, I can more easily express the warmth and kindness I feel toward others.
Similarly the language barrier, multi-cultural environment and foreign customs would not only affect my academic performance but have a toll on my social life as well. Despite the difficulties of adjusting to this new country, I remained unworried by the trials that faced me.
