Ed Zander joined Motorola in 2004 with high dreams and expectations, but also a friendly ear to listen to all problems presented by other Motorola executives and employees. His position with the international conglomerate is due to an unfavourable course of events, which forced Motorola to give up their leading position to Nokia. More particularly, the company failed to make the switch from analog to digital mobile telephones. This failure forced company officials to decide in favour of a new direction, including the hiring of external Ed Zander as chairman and CEO, in the detriment of popular internal candidate Mike Zafirovski. A major downsize of Ed Zander's hiring was his limited experience with wireless products and consumer marketing. However, he was a dedicated leader, committed to achieving organizational goals. As chairman and CEO, Ed Zander managed to significantly increase the company's sales and profits.

Zander began his job by thoroughly visiting the company, with the stated goal of finding out what it was the company was doing and the technologies it was possessing. The conclusion was formed into Zander's major transformation goal. He wanted the company to create a better image for itself, a unique image that would highlight the company's features and not the market trend and other competitors. Also, he wanted to unify the structural and organizational departments within Motorola into a single unit working together to achieve the corporate goals, rather than secluded departments which had no connection one with the other. Zander wanted that Motorola employees work as a team; he desired to motivate them and unify their individual goals with the overall corporate objective.

In addition, a major transformation he subscribed to was that of reducing the bureaucracy within the organization. Also, in the category of changes brought about by the new chairman and CEO, Motorola presented its customers with gadgets incorporating cutting edge technologies; these gadgets expanded their functionalities and could easily compete with any product on the market.

But to achieve corporate unification and the improvement of the international image of Motorola's, the chief executive officer had to change the corporate culture and values. This was to be commenced by the formation of a new mission statement. The new statement had to contain references about a stronger company devoted to satisfying the needs of customers, their usage of the latest technologies and also the true importance of Motorola employees to the success of the company. It could sound something like this: On our path to organizational growth and excellence, we thank our customers for their loyalty by offering them the best products, the result of hard work from our committed employees, combined with the cutting edge technologies of today and tomorrow.
