Why are you interested in the EOP program? What do you hope to achieve by participating in this program? characters available 1000
My principal interest in the EOP Scholars Program is the chance that it offers for me to pursue my personal and educational goals and to overcome the relative economic disadvantages that I have experienced. I am hopeful that my genuine passion to learn will offset my SAT scores and my GPA and that some of my involvement in worthwhile activities and my experience will allow me to contribute to the diversity of the program, the community, and the institution. In addition to an intellectual curiosity, I have a genuine desire to help other people in need through my hard work, drive, and the perseverance to make positive changes in the world despite difficult circumstances or problems.
If you had a full hour to meet with a government representative or community leader, what one issue or concern would you raise and why? characters available 1000
If given the opportunity, I would address the issue of cuts to the high school (and middle school) student metro cards program. The issue does not affect me personally, since I will soon be enrolled in college. However, it is extremely important to do everything possible to promote education at the high school and middle school level, particularly in economically disadvantaged communities. Cutting back student metro card programs contradicts the fundamental importance of reducing dropout rates, particularly in those communities.
What fictional character or characters from literature, film, theatre, or television have intrigued you or taught you something and why? characters available 1000
The characters from the novel The Kite Runner intrigued me tremendously and taught me valuable lessons. The protagonist, Amir, taught me that people make mistakes and that hiding mistakes (whether from one's self or from the external world) only exacerbates the harm caused by those mistakes. Conversely, admitting to one's mistakes and owning up to them offers a chances of redemption and mitigation of negative consequences, provided one can forgive one's self first. The ethnic and religious conflicts in the book also intrigued me and confirmed what I have always suspected about the importance of being open-minded and non-judgmental in that regard. It also reinforced my appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities that are often taken for granted by many contemporary Americans.
Please describe a daily routine or tradition of yours that may seem ordinary to others but holds special meaning for you. Why is this practice significant to you?
Every Saturday, my parents and I have always met for brunch after my piano lessons. It is a Chinese tradition called "Yum-cha," meaning to drink tea. We drink tea and eat traditional Chinese food called "Dim sum" at a restaurant near my music school. To others in my culture, Yum-cha may seem to be nothing more than an ordinary ritual of daily brunch with the family. However, to me, it has always been something very special; now that I am preparing to leave my family to pursue my education, it has become even more cherished. Besides its significance as a cultural tradition that has been passed down from my ancestors, it is one of the primary ways that we have managed to preserve our heritage. On a more personal level, it is an opportunity to share quality time with my family that is sometimes in short supply because of our respective daily schedules and responsibilities. It is a ritual that I hope to share with my children eventually.
